Our youngest cat Barney, a year old now drinks loads of water, he needs his drinking bowl refilled every day. He seems happy enough with fresh chlorinated water.

Our 20 year old does too and it's her way of coping with kidney issues. She seems to manage by just drinking enough, but if Barney's getting through a heck of lot of water then it might be worth getting him checked out.

If a cat is eating dried food it is gonna take more water onboard... Older cats suffer with kidney problems and drink like a fish.

The deal is: If you start feeding a cat - stray/feral or even a pedigree house cat.

You gotta do it the same time(s) of the day for wet food (so the flies don't get to it in the summer). So the cat comes hungry and the food does not spoil. Then leave dry food about with clean water.

Clean and scrub the bowls out with hot water - rinse the detergent/washing up liquid off them well.

Once you made "a deal with a cat to feed it". The unwritten law is - you got to honour it - 7days a week - 365days a year. Same time - same quantities - on time and in full....

But the cat will always - always be fussy. Even a stray yardcat - you will buy one lot of food - it will devour it - meow at you for more and will eat four/five pouches in a sitting. You will be pleased with yourself the cat is eating well - buy another big batch of what you think is the cats favorite food. Then the cat will turn it's nose up at - not take it. You will think it is ill or eating somewhere else. Then you change the food and it will eat like a horse again. Cats like a varied diet - they bore easily of one type of food...

That is so true, our various cats have loved brand X then for no reason turn their noses up at it and won't eat it. Buy brand Y and again they love it, until they don't....

I tend to buy for the yardcat at workshop 40/48 boxes of whatever is on offer in the supermarket - be it cheap or a premium brand. Mix it up...

Wifey does the same at home - every now again if I get stuck with a big box cat food the stray cat has rejected - I swap it out with wifey at home - for one the two house cats have rejected.

At one point - I had convinced myself the yardcat did not like poultry based wet cat food and prefered fish based ones. But that is not the case...

Tarzan will eat dry cream crackers too, if we have them.

Gave him some nice roast chicken last night. Licked the pattern off the plate.

Refused that this morning. Wanted the Felix sachets

Stray yardcat - I up the calories in the winter for him - save all the meat fat from home - mash up a boiled egg in mayo now and again - odd tea spoon of olive oil on his wet food. Plus when it is really cold I buy in kitten wet food for him - this is more calorie dense. I even given him a lump of butter to lick at or a lump of cheese to nibble - he will also take/loves a spoon full of beef dripping/tallow...

I got a little old brown tupperware tub at home - wifey saves up all the bits of meat and fat the grandchildren don't eat off there plates - and she cuts it up small and I recycle it into a hungry feral cat.

Done the risk assessment: Cholesterol and heart disease low down on the things he gotta contend with on a cold night.

Dig yourself an earth pit in the bottom of conifer hedge and fill it with dry leaves like a stray cat does on a cold night down to minus 5 degrees.

And I will feed you as much "junk food" as you can eat first...
