Cat flaps!

This is the only place I can fit a cat flap - other doors are double glazed. Can I just chop away and bed in with some sealant?


If so, what sealant and can anyone recommend a decent flap that doesn’t let the draughts in?

Cut it out & bed on silicone rubber will be fine. Stainless steel screws in the corners so the swinging flaps dont just hang on the sticky stuff.

How will you train the cat to know which of the two is entry and which is exit?

I've fitted a couple, the panels are usually an expanded insulation sandwich and cut easily. If you get a microchip operated one it means you won't get the neighbourhood cats in and the wind can't blow it open.

I took out a glass panel and stored it. Then I got one the same size with a suitable hole bored.

Just watch out for the flaps with magnets , pals cat was off his food then I noticed every time he went to eat he got stuck to the metal food bowl

Definitely a microchip operated one and don't forget to fit at the correct height for your cat.

A friends cat kept losing it's collar (with ID tag and magnet for the flaps) when it went out.

New microchip flap is now fitted.
Cat is now getting used to curfew hours - it can come home at any hour but the flap won't let it to go out for any late parties on a school night. Friend is a techie type and loves that she can use her phone to check if the cat is at home or outside ... I know some strange people !

We have a Staywell flap, an it has been great, but the bu**er would sit at the flap wailing for the door to be opened if he knew we were about. Its all part of the expected service you see ?

If we were not in earshot, he would dive in and out without hesitation.

Same here, but worse with the dog. He howled at 5AM today to be let in because he knows that 'indoors would get out of bed to pander to him. Funny how he can manage just fine any other time!

We've had two Sureflap chip operated cat flaps, they've been really good.
The first one lasted 6 years and was moved multiple times as we did the extension and other works, it got a battering so we bought another one.
It keeps out other cats, foxes, badgers etc.

Magnets in collars are a bad idea...cat will come home with screws/nails stuck to it's neck!

+1 for the microchip catflaps...they work great and keep out all but the smartest neighbourhood cats.

We had one that worked out if it tailgated close enough it could get in .

Watching him get it wrong was quite funny

Modify them to swing in one direction and make an outward and an inward door.
