If you have an item that doesn't need to move and has an ethernet port then that will win over Wifi every time in my book. There are also different levels of network equipment.
I have recently started using an old Cisco Switch that has POE(power over ethernet) and some ex corporate Cisco Wifi Access points. The beauty is the access points don't need a separate power supply as they get power from the ethernet cable. They are actually lower speed than the Wifi on the router but even though they are connected via the switch which is in turn connected to the router there is a noticeable difference in the speed through the Cisco units ie they are faster. Those access points can be bought for £10-15. The only downside is they are complicated as they so many options/features.
