casting in iron

an interesting video i wonder how long the fettlers lived after being exposed to all the silica sand dust of the castings not wearing masks . i knew someone that suffered from it and it was sickening to see

and if it was so bad, why were you telling people on here to use it for media blasting, when you knew that there were safer alternatives available.

because i wear airfed full blasting helmet and my cabinet has a 4 inch woodchip extracta and can pull more air out than the blast gun can put in so i still use it and at 68 in good health breathing wise and chest even though i used to smoke 60 fags a day .blokes in them days had nothing

you may and you take the risk, but you are posting your comments in a public place, other people may not know of the risks like you do and may not have the safety gear that you do......... you could at the same time have posted the risks of using it and the recommended safety gear.

Reminds me of my time in the iron foundry in the 70's, masks were not compulsory but most folks wore them due to the dust in the atmosphere.

Casting is not done with dry sand, its either wet greensand, or oil sand. Silicosis is only a risk for reprocessing the sand or initial grinding coarse sand into fine facing sand. There are ways around it and I didnt see anything bad on video but I only had a quick look. More likely from sand blasting cast items!

they snapped the runners and risers off then ground them with a big pedestal grinder that was the bad bit

We used to shot blast our castings, there were sacrificial plates opposite the shot wheels and they would last about 6 months!

I cast with Mansfield Red Greensand which is damp but never wet, if it was wet it would explode with the molten metal, as you say oil based sand [ie petrobond being one of them] does not need any grinding as it's fine enough already, ,I remix greensand damp so never have safety problems.

Both absolutely true, silicosis is a lot like the pneumoconiosis that killed a lot of coal miners young - it's illegal to use silica sand in industrial "sand" blasting, has been for many years.

Which is why anyone who sees some shaved monkey using a petrol saw cutting concrete, slabs, paving blocks etc without dust suppression should report them. You see if quite often where 'Ripoff & Legget' are doing drives, but more disturbingly you also see it a lot with sub-contractors doing roadside works for councils and utilities.

The difference between a bloke using a petrol saw and a shaved monkey would be using suppression and not.

No idea why anyone works without it tbh, it's not difficult, time consuming or expensive.

I worked in the boat trade most of my career, Much grinding of fibreglass, I was the only guy round here out of scores who had his own powered respirator, most blokes either didnt bother or just wore a paper nuisance dust mask. One grp trimmer i knew died of silicosis years ago & a few more recently.
You used to see the glass motes twinkling in the sun with the factory doors open.

There are many different kinds of sand used for foundry work. Which is what you were talking about.

FWIW Shot blasting in a rotoblast machine uses steel shot at least 80% of the time.

Pedantic. I wouldnt even call it damp. Lightly moistened just enough to stick together.

( My sand is wet! I think the sealed bucket let rain water in, I need some dry weather to spread it out in the sun!)

Interesting, many different types including iron and aluminium. As somone previously said, no dust is safe to be breathing in.
