Cast repair - Brewdexta's fixed steady

This is @brewdexta aka Andy's Fixed Steady. Broken before he took ownership, the piece long lost. He whittled a bit of qtr plate to suit, I did the gluing.

1.6mmm Multistike tungsten
10lpm
On the pedal so around 50-80ish amps
1.6mm Sif No8 rod.

First a few tacks


Problem was the torch head wouldn't fit inbetween the webbing so I had to bend the tungsten a little, I fired it up on the bench and then quickly bent it with some grips. Had to turn to gas upto 10lpm for 5.


Then the tedious task of weld a bit wait a bit

weld a bit....



You could hold your hand on the part almost straight after each stitch the temp was so low. Waited untill it was cold before carrying on with the next.

Took about 3hrs in total. Welding time was a fraction of that

Thanks, 3 bigger tacks either side would have been enough, fil the rest with body filler before a lick of paint. It's no wonder they cover cast lathe parts in body filler, it's a dog ruff casting, though it didn't put up a fight arc/pool wise

Nice innovation with the tungsten bending there.
I have the luxury of a wp24w which would of nested nicely in that gap.
Good to see a bit of thought about getting a bigger torch in there didn't steer you away from it.

I cant take credit for it, there is very clever guy on weldingweb called Zapster, I picked up the trick from him.

It's got me out of a few pickles
