cast-iron downpipe to plastic

I'm working on a property where the council have replaced old 2.5" (65mm) cast downpipes with standard (68mm) plastic ones.

As the ID of the old pipe is too narrow to accept a standard plastic downpipe socket they've put the socket on upside down and you .'. get a trickle of water coming out of the joint.

I'm looking for a socket/adapter/reducer that has same size socket at top (takes 68mm plastic pipe) but a narrow bottom part...

I measured the ID of the old pipe to be about 57/58mm

Anyone know if these are available?

NB I only post this thread in The Brew Room to save admins from moving it there anyway

Could you warm the pipe with a hot air gun and stretch it open with a suitable former to form an expanded socket...

possibly. I've seen that done, on plastic to plastic, before but it would be quite a stretch and makes servicing at a later date tricky

I would guess the cast iron pipe is actually 2 1/4" which is 57.15mm so you could try a stainless steel exhaust reducer. You may not get the exact size but if you put the existing coupler on correctly you might find something that fits.

You can buy cast to plastic adaptors, problem is the myth that everything was better in the old days. Cast down pipe is often not "standard" sized or particularly round.

If it's hidden use the rubber one, if not CT1 is the answer

Not sure how the dimensions compare but I fitted Brett Martin cast iron effect on my house.

you can shape it out of lead and fit it inside far better than using plastic

it will also give you a better seal as well

you need a flat sheet and stretch it into the shape you want or buy a lead spout and just bend the sides up

makes no difference in which way you do it

I solved this problem by turning an internal adaptor from delrin and bonding it to the plastic with a good quality sealant. Been working perfectly for the last 4 years and is nice and neat unlike those horrible flex couplers.

ID of the plastic on one end, ID of the cast in the other with a raised lip the OD of the plastic pipe in the middle.

Where does that price appear? When I look at it, it says £14.03 for primed in 65mm. The same product is offered by lots of people, so to be sure it will pay to shop around.

Even if it is £70, it says 100 year life expectancy, so that's about 2p a day.

The link shows a black item at £23.36 inc VAT but delivery at £38.50 + VAT. Primed is only £14.03 but that's still over £60. As you say it could be found cheaper elsewhere I expect.

Mb when they start selling them in Aldi I'll look into that .

Meantime need to take a more Heath-Robinson approach
