cast iron barbeque leg

Morning. A freind brought this into work this morning and asked if i could do any thing with it.

Its off a small cast iron barbeque/fire pit, he was moving it and dropped it and broke the leg off. Is there any chance i can get away with brazing this with flux coated rods on my arc welder? Im not keen on going to the expence of buying rods for cast iron as ill probably never use them again. 6013 wont work on this will they?

Firstly are you sure it's actually cast iron? It could be steel. If it was mine, I'd grind a vee and give it a go with 6013 rods. After all, it's only a small barbecue and only a small bit on the end so what's the worst that will happen if the weld failed? Loss of a sausage or two?

Ill do a spark test but it does look cast. As long as i can do a half decent job id be happy, like you say its only going to be supporting the weight of a small barbeque and obviously it wont be getting moved around when its beint used, so it wont realy be taking too much stress.

Going by the moulding look and grey colour and the break I would say it's cast iron. You can just buy cast iron arc rods at around £1.50 each, no need to buy a pack. Do a good repair as a barbi falling over could mean danger. You could braze with o/a but I'm unsure about arc brazing.

looks a simple enough bit, could you not copy it based on a bit of angle iron? might be less of a faff in the end.. by the time you've got the right rods, prepped the joint, pre heated, brazed, clean it up, found it's cracked, repeat, find a crack, repeat..... or is that just me

No, probably not just you, ive never tried cast iron so ill probably stuff it up! The angle iron may be an option, cheers.

Or you could two holes and make a steel splint for behind the leg and bolt it together ...might not look fantastic but it will be safe ...jeff..

I was thinking that it's only a couple of centimeters of the foot part that's come off, so even if the weld failed it'd only drop that small distance which wouldn't be enough to be a danger. Just an inconvenience as sausages roll off.
Yes, if it won't weld with what you've got, I'd drill it and bolt both parts to a bit of steel plate behind.

I reckon two bits of angle iron, first bit cut to suit then tapered down to teh slim end, with a second part welded to first at the appropriate angle on that joint, could be done right. Wouldn't take that much more time than drilling etc. an hours job, all done;.

Looks good to me , I was once asked years ago to have a go at fixing a crack on the top of a wood stove ,I buzzed it with a cast rod it worked fine ...jeff...
