Casing the Joint???

For wife's "peace of mind" I'd consider one of the doorbell type camera that also allow two way conversations.

It is something we've thought about a bit (but "bit" is the thing).
I somewhat baffled (& not overly intrigued tbh) by CCTV & Clever Doorbells.
Which ones are good, which cams are compatible with what, do you need ones with Apps (& if so which ones), do you need a subscription, which ones are a ripoff just well advertised, is it better/cheaper to assemble your own etc etc.

Yes you want something to be decent, user-friendly, effective & to work well & reliably - but you don't want to he conned into getting something "meh" at strong money when there's better value.

If anyone has any recommendations then be happy to get them
(Hopefully not too expensive cos we just spent a small fortune on a new hip for the wee woman lol.

ive no complaints with my ring doorbell, works with alexa speakers for ring and reply and the app on my phone lets me answer the door when im away. its a good end user friendly product.

Can't you use some of the radio tracking darts that the wildlife people use ?
Air gun out the window....FWUMP!...and they go on their way, with a dart in their back.
Dart falls out (or is yanked out) chip stays in...

No Alexa Im afraid (& not keen on the permanent "spy" aspect, tho I know mobiles might be no better)

then you use the ring speakers instead. i prefer alexa speakers as they do more for the same money.

I couldn't be bothered to read all the answers but I popped around the neighbours earlier and knocked on their door, waited a minute then knocked again with no answer so left. I know they have doors closed and may not have heard me with the first knock,(although I could go round and rob the place now!).

Pretty much what I do - you knew know if someone has a radio on loud, doing something else, on a call maybe, and didn't hear the first knock.

I wouldn't be too suspicious unless they tried to flog me stuff, driveway tarmacing, got any scrap metal etc . .
