Casenit replacement?

E536 it is. Was it's use as an additive in table salt?

I had some gearbox parts to case, flat pieces of EN36 the size of a 2p piece.
No where local I could knock on the door and say could you harden these. I came up against the £75 miminmum order charge;
The nearest place to me is near Heathrow.
I saw someone on a landy forum made gears and asked if he had them cased, he did and was happy to chuck my parts in with his gears
when they went for hardening.

I've still got a tin of unopened kasenit, its 20 years past its best before date, so I hope its still ok if I ever want to use it. I heard that it was banned because it gave of cyanide compounds when it was being used, but not sure how true that is

I would expect with care and some ppe, and for occasional use it wouldn't cause you an issue?

It's something you have to try hard to make dangerous (or demonstrate a fair bit of stupidity) - if mixed with strong acids it releases hydrogen cyanide gas, so the easiest thing would have been to make them put a warning on the tin, but Pixie Protection caters to the lowest common denominator, also known as "But think of the children!"

I knew a man who used the carbons from batteries ground up, I don't know how successful it was.

I imagine a big german steelworks has benefitted from this and people buying better through harden grades. The chemical is still used as a food additive and other uses.

Does a part still need to be heated red, quenched, and tempered after casing?

It does - quick way is straight after dipping in the powder a few times / pack carburising, then unless you need it glass-hard (and just as brittle) tempering by bringing it to a lower temperature and quenching again.

In my job we do have to 'think of the children'!!!

The 1kg tin on the right is unopened and probably as old as the screwdriver you made at school!

I honestly don't know whether we're allowed to use it these days.

We had to get rid of our pail of quenching oil several years ago due to fire risk, and our two Warco lathes don't run with coolant due the risk of bacterial contamination.

It isn't dangerous, you have to be beyond stupid. It is used as a food additive so over eating is a possible concern. Kermit is one of those things caught up in the REACH regs. These are so important I have forgotten what it stands for or what it is about. Just that it has caused me massive inconvenience.
