what would I need to case hardened mild steel 'V' block?
we use to use some black powder stuff years ago but I cant remember what we called.
all I can remember was to heat the metal to cherry red then dip it in this black powdery stuff.

Its called 'Kasenit' a search will reveal suppliers. Process is correct although its not the most sucessful way of casing depends on the material. I havent done any for a long time either but i think EN3b gets the best results normally colour coded blue, due to it has no alloying elements to make it more machinable.
It does work but you don't get a very deep case. I used to put parts to be cased in with stuff a mate used to send to be cased, his parts had a 20 or 30 thou case. I tried kasenit and it was't a very deep case maybe a few thou, but it did mean you could get a hard surface.
I remember my mate[a farrier] saving hoof clippings for the bloke in the local forge, I think that was for case hardening?
