According to Ross Brawn, F1 could be going with hydrogen, so maybe road cars will follow. It's a "noise thing".
Hi, From what I understand particulates are a product of direct injection not diesel engines, so direct injection petrol engines produce them as well hence the need for particulate filters.

Short journeys aren't particularly great for petrols either, though massively better than they used to be back in the days of cars on choke rinsing oil off bores and degrading the oil. It's actually amazing how quick some of the tiny engined petrols pop into action now!
Lots of cars now have cooling systems with multiple valves to shut parts off. This keeps coolant in the block and stops it circulating until it's warmed up, then it opens up the rest of the system. Works very well.
We used to call them "thermostats".
