Carpet joining .

Is it just me who has problems getting carpet to join at doorways?

I don't have a problem with stretching and kicking to the gripper but the aluminium door way strips do not seem to grab the carpet well.

I have searched youtube but can on find disimilar materials such as tile to carpet or laminate to carpet. Those videos that show joining carpet to carpet only show using seaming tape and an iron.

Main thing I am looking for is what tool is available to stretch the carpet to the aluminium transition strip. And make sure it's pushed in tight...

It gets easier once you've done a few. I always work towards a door after one tim eI cut a carpet in to the doorway then ended up with a gap on one side after I stretched it. It's not so bad if there's only one doorway but if there's two it's hard to get out of it when you mess it up.

basically if your using smooth edge, fix opposite edge to the doorway down (using a bolster chisel to push the carpet down between smooth edge and wall / staple the other edge down

then stretch the carpet towards the door,
I used http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Ironmongery/d170/Metal+Edging/sd3009/Carpet+Cover+Strip/p31508 with the 2 pieces of carpet butted against each other so the strip has something to push down into...

and used 3mm aka #6 screws to fix the strip down they need to be slightly longer than you think, else they won't hit the floor at first...and you then get a "fix" into carpet that then pops up later and lets the strip go loose..., used a power driver till the strip just started to deform.

I have a kicker mate.

Its the u shaped aluminium strip I have already fitted to concrete. I am trying to get the carpet into it but it does n ot seem to grip.

I need a tool that grips but goes under/into the strip. A bolster chisel with spikes on would be nice...lol

Knee kicker with a flat chisel to push it under works.

All I use is a knee kicker as close to the strip as possible and then press the carpet into it with an old blunt chisel, always works ok.

Are the strip barbs still standing proud and not been flattened too much?

Ok now I know what you mean..

as above as long as the spikes are still up then push it in and then pull it back slightly and it should "bite" into the backing

What sort of backing is on the carpet?

Hession . Its actually very expensive carpet. I think thats the main issue its very thick pile so the U in the strip is very tight.

Could well be the reason, not enough clearance between the cover and the spikes / carpet won't yield enough to let it fit

But I dont think they make a thicker aluminium strip and if I stick something in to widen it the spikes will then be flattened..

stretch the carpet and push it in to the aluminium strip as far as u can then push the tufts in with a 3inch thin blade bolster chissel . i get loads to refit doing wiring in houses

don't think those grippers a suitable for certain types of carpet, some heavy woven back will just flatten the grips as they are too soft for it, better off with the type you screw from above, you can get plenty of grip with them

I think you might well be right. The problem I have now is |I need to stretch the carpet and the type you fit from above seem to just hold in place and not allow stretching to it.....arrgggg. lol

if its a wooden floor stretch it staple it then fit

Sadly its concrete and damn hard at that...I laid it myself some25 years ago. lol

cut the underlay slightly back in doorway then drill and screw a wooden gripper rod down to the concrete floor then and hook it over then tuck the carpet under the aluminium door strip

good call I think thats going to be the one thing I can do. and then use the type that screw down from above...

If we couldn't get them to grip we used to glue them down!
