Carpet inner roll

This may be of use to the other small time solo workers / crafters / designers here like me...
I've discovered that cheapy carpet shops bin the cardboard inner tubes the carpet roll feeds off, think of a giant bog roll, about 5" diameter & about 10 ft long. Strong stuff & potentially good for rolling up drawings in or using as packaging for mail order stuff. (Cut down to size with a saw). Also they seem to bin a lot of carpet remenants, which I find useful for preventing ratchet straps scuffing newly painted work on the way for site installation.
I feel a Nobel prize coming my way. Probably posted in said carpet bog roll.

A mate of mine built a dust extraction system for his woodworking gear from the cardboard tubes.

I use them in my work van to:
Keep my cable rods in.
Smoke sniffers.
Long lance extinguisher nozzles.
Plus drawings.

At home I used them for.
Storing threaded Bar.
Silver solder.
Brazing rods.
off cuts for welding rods.

There is a host of use.

I, long long time ago,once made a four poster bed out of them for a display event, even painted it pretty colours and ribbons.

And as "sonotubes" for concrete pilings.
And tunnels for ferrets...

Now if you go back a few generations, they came on a bamboo pole.. I used those to hold up wire antennas :-)

I made a set of 'Bat Phones' ( a percussion instrument ) with a load of them cut them various lengths with a crosscut saw made up a frame to hold them at comfortable height , you play them buy whacking the end of the tubes with a pair of table tennis bats with foam stuck on one side ....jeff

Showing you age there a wee bit.
If you were a Wilton approved place and you ordered a carpet, it would arrive on a nice PTFF or PVC inner tube and in that would be Wilton approved carpet gripper, door bars and joiners.
no difference to the other stuff, apart from it hard "Wilton" printed on it.

I can remember the bamboo poles, used one as a pole vaulting pole. Didn't go well!

I've often thought of asking at carpet shops for the inside bit of tubing, but wondered about how I'd cut it up to get it home. PAH also charge a fortune for little wooden houses for rabbits etc to hide in - if you buy a wooden decking tile for a few quid you can easily make your own much sturdier version.

Glue one of these to a wooden stick and they will happily chomp their way through the cardboard tube, or wooden tile in no time.
They are easy turn different directions to cut different shapes.
It id best to use a latex glue and not Duct tape.
They will chew the duct tape faster than you can blink.

I know you can cut them with a saw, it was more a question of cutting it up in the shop or warehouse. And carrying it on the bus.

I do have a car actually, just would be a bit embarrassed to be cutting it into bits in the shop.

When I was a boy we had chairs made out of cardboard tube. They were 60's style. great big cardbaord tubes 3-4ft in daimeter. a base to sit on 1/2 way up and a cut out in the front above that to make a back. They were that big I fell of one when i was about 6 and broke my arm. Never seen any others ever. Cant remember where my folks got them from, but it would have been London

My mate, he was a carpet fitter, reminded me the time, during a boozy afternoon, we made Spud cannons.

Mr Plod was less than pleased.

I used to pick these up, pack them with a ssawdust and glycerol mix, saw them into sections, to then burn.

Carpet fitters were only too happy to see the back of them, and had no issue with me sawing them into thirds in their store room, to the extent that, if I offered to clear up the dust, they would always be "it OK, we'll do that..."


Nowerdays I find pallets easier. Builders yards are only too happy to see the back of them too.

It was the only way I could think of doing the trick with the head & front legs at one end and the tail & back legs at the other end of the tube....

we can use them for the internal shape on a rocket stove as long as you seal it up well it makes a good form on inside and outside depending on what you get your hands on as goes for inside you try to burn it out slowly outside just peels off
