Caring for Butchers block type Oak worktop

Its in the new house, don't like it but cant afford to change it yet.
So how do I look after it?
Seen various oils and potions any one have one?

I've always used mineral/chopping board oil...

Food safe, easy to apply, long lasting etc...did some time as a 'butcher' in Tesco on the meat counter as a kid and a lot of time at home chopping rabbits, squirrels, wood pigeons and deer, the block I had then was off my grandfather and it was second hand when he 'acquired' it in ww2...that's been retired now for an end grain block my father made from offcuts

We got a a granite chopping board from Dunelm for not a lot of money , think it was around a tenner? Need to sharpen the knives occasionally but I always did with a wooden board

I can't understand having a chopping block made from rock. It defies logic, unless you're happy to resharpen after every stroke.

Your knives will last far longer with wood. Quieter too.

As i understand it, you are talking about a worktop, not a chopping board.

If so, Id go over it with a DA sander (if its already marked). Somthing like 180 will be all you need. 320 or whatever if you think otherwise, but we are not talking 800g.

Then use one of the osmo products. I use polyx for stuff, but they probably do a specific worktop one. You wont need anything larger than a 750ml tin (about £30) and could probably make do with half that. It goes way further than you might imagine.

Oils like danish etc dont neccesarily stop staining if you spill something like beetroot. Something like osmo does and is much more durable. I made a kitchen about 6years ago and the oak worktops are still nice, even in high traffic areas
