Career Advice - Going back on the Tools ⚒️

Hi folks - just wanted to pick your brains a little…

I’ve been working in welding sales for the past year, but am worried about loosing my practical skills - so am mulling over going back on the tools.

I’ve been offered a welder role at BAE in Barrow, but have heard some negative comments about the management structure.

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of the DDH in Barrow, and whether its worth taking a pay cut to gain experience there?

Or any other thoughts/suggestions?

A bloke i know is a senior naval architect there, if anything isnt up to scratch on his watch its done again, no messing, I certainly wouldnt want him looking over my shoulder on any job even if i had done it perfectly!

There are lots of things to worry about. Management is most definitely one of them. Many of us have learned that the hard way.

Well the replies don't seem overly positive so far - perhaps I just had rose tinited glasses about the place .

Sounds like you have done both in the past which is good at least you know what it is like on both jobs rather than assuming it's greener on the other side which can happen.

Theres a lot of jobs near me for the Rosyth dockyard aswell as BAE on the clyde.

Definitely fell into that trap before, left a blue chip company for a small shop who said they’d train me up on 6g - ended up fabbing up gates and railings.
That was certainly a life lesson.

its like belsen without the party atmosphere. largely ruined by management promoted to their level of incompetence. it might be improved now but i cant say, i've been out for nearly 10 years.
bae is a good place to work if you can handle not being able to touch anything that isn't to do with your trade, which often means you're sat with your thumb up your hoop for hours on end getting rollocked for not being able to do anything. most in there have worked there man and boy and are not aware there is anywhere else on earth to work

I wouldn't be taking a pay cut the way things are going, nor would I be leaving a secure job, I read somewhere we may hit another recession

Sorry to be the voice of doom and gloom but the economy is too busy for its own good, inflation at 8%, everyone is overworked, something's going to give at some point and it will all come crashing back down again.

I’ll echo comments above, if your in a secure job with decent pay and good working conditions then I’d be staying put for the time being.
Although on the other side of the coin sometimes job satisfaction is more valuable than the relative money it pays, like if it’s a 10% cut but terms are far better, the work is preferable god work life balance etc then it needs to be considered.
The age old adage being the grass isn’t always greener…
Times are very uncertain at the moment so make sure you carefully weigh any move up. I dont know if I’d move just to “keep my hand in it”, not enough of a justification for me but that’s not to say it’s not right for you, we’re all at different places in life

Recession is inevitable

I was talking to my financial advisor who looks after my pension funds this morning and he believes there will be another recession over the next 12 months.
