Car Wheel Size Variants.

Right...I think I may be sorted, I now have....

A space saver.
The manufacturers gunk and compressor.
A string repair kit.
A torch for finding the nail.
A pair of pliers for pulling out the nail.
A stanley knife for cutting off the excess string
A bit of foam to kneel on.
An old coat in case it's raining.
An old cap in case its still raining.
An extended socket bar for the nuts the garage windy hammered on.
Wet wipes for cleaning the hands.
Old towel for drying the hands.
First aid kit for scuffed knuckles when jacking the car.
A puncture aerosol (given by a mate and forgot I had).
A fancy red flashing warning thing (given to me by the same mate).
A fire extinguiser, well it was cheap and looks good.
RAC recovery.
10mpg less due to the weight in the boot.

I can't help but think if I witnessed any other person with that much I would consider them insane.

I always leave the nail in and use tyre weld. Working next door to a bloke who manufactures 5000 pallets a week you get pretty expert with punctures! I have often had a nail in the tyre for a few thousand miles without harm.

Space saver wheels, if differing in diameter from the other wheels, will also trigger tyre deflation warnings. Not sure if re-calibration of the deflation warning system will cope with a large difference in wheel diameters.

Did ok on my daughter's mini. She was stuck on the M2 one night with a ruined 16" tyre and the only wheel I could find was a 14" BMW one. Drove that home and got a new tyre the next day.

Now I have a stack of 4 spare mini wheels in my garden shed each with a good tyre. Not getting caught like that again

I hope it's a big car or you'll have a pretty full boot!
Mind the torch battery doesn't end up flat by the time you need it, and be sure that the wheel nuts/bolts will work for the space saver - I once got stuck with a puncture as the spare wheel (proper spare, not space saver) was steel whereas the car was on alloys which use longer bolts, and couldn't go with the steel wheel rendering it useless. Fortunately a garage wasn't all that far away and during ordinary hours.

Hi, It will trigger the warning because it's not getting a pressure reading from that wheel.

Hi, You won't need the wet wipes, just take hand cleaner you can then rinse you hands off in a nearby puddle because it's bound to be tipping it down.

For once I actually got a decent non socks Xmas present from daughter no2, a wind up torch and it's a belter, needs very little winding for a good beam and lasts a decent time before another few turns are required... must be 20 years old now and still works fine.

Depends entirely on how the system works. My MINI uses the ABS sensors and triggers the tyre pressure light when it sees a sustained speed difference in a wheel implying it's running on a lower diameter due to being under-inflated.

Regarding legalities......
I can't get hold of a linkable version of BS AU 159 but this basically covers it and refers to the relevant legislation.

Last page General Notes externally fitted plugs are specifically listed as "not acceptable". If it goes wrong and there's some implication that the tyre was involved and someone spots a "not acceptable" repair........well the insurance company would be laughing for certain, what other consequences there might be you could only guess at and would depend on the situation.

Real world they work and are faster than swapping for a spare so at the side of the road would I?....... Probably but I'd only consider it temporary.

On a car I had it had alloy wheels but the spare wheel was steel. The tyre size diameter was different between the steel and alloy but the overall diameter was the same. Perhaps this was what was happening with your thin spare cumbriasteve?

Exactly why I would never be happy without a real spare. I’ve had a couple of blowouts in the last few years and they weren’t even cheap tyres, it can and does happen.

That's hit something, possibly on the road and even some time ago but weakened the carcass. Be difficult to kerb it to that extent surely

No idea, just noticed vibration in outside lane then speed started to drop so I pulled onto hard shoulder, good make with plenty of tread

Being able to change a wheel is becoming a thing of the past with the general public, got a puncture on the way to glasgow ounce noticed when i was refueling at the bp station outside Dumbarton no idea of how long jt had been like thay except it was ok leaving tynedrum. Anyway reverse to that side after filling up and the proceed to jack up the wheel3 and get the full size spare out the boot (dont like having anything else) and proceed to put it on. A guy roughly my own age come over to me and asks what the hell i was upto and i said what dose it look like. Then he walkes off in the huff i mean i did have my entire tool kit out because had been restoring the landy the day before and hadn't remembered to take it out the car. Thought it would have been pretty obvious still i was just changing the wheel.
