I bought a full set of five Continental Premium Contact 6's for my VW Passat estate car (to include full size spare) - they are noisy - I wish now I had put a set of S1 Michelin's on it (expensive mistake).

Get my car on the "wrong type of tarmac - at the wrong speed" and you think you have a wheel bearing failing.

The drone is unreal.

My V40 had the premium contacts fitted from new. They were okay grip wise but the noise was terrible!

What you said about bearing noise is spot on - there's a bit of the A14 I drive on every day and it was exactly like that. So much so that I replaced a rear bearing just to be sure.

I can only assume manufacturers fit them because they are good on emissions.

No been many times! Been to Paris - that was expensive.

Have friends who live in Troyes - real nice place - old buildings that did not get flattened in the last war.

Been to a few places on the South Coast - day trips off Med cruise ships - so did not buy too much at all.

I like France from the little I have seen of it.

Outskirts of Paris do look a bit rough or they did in 1985.

Noise is the big issue with tyres now.

I would duplicate what is on your car now - if they are quiet from new - from the factory.

When I’m out walking our dog I‘m often somewhere along the 50mph main road, and the noise that comes off certain passing cars is horrendous. It’s tyre roar, not exhaust, like a much magnified version of the noise from the old ‘town and country’ type tyres from years ago. Except they are often ordinary looking cars, not SUV or 4x4 types. God only knows what rubber they have fitted, as most cars are half the volume.

when I lived there was quoted €20 to fit the tyre and balance an €15 for the valve...+ vat....

they also wanted €150 to replace the inner tube on the rear tyre on my JCB3X.....+ 85 for the inner tube...
and thats if I took the wheel there...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
got a mate to get 2 truck tyre levers from M/mart and a new tube ....shipped them overnight UPS...
I just did by hand in the end...made an Hydraulic bead breaker...
in 16 years never had a visit to a tyre shop.....I bought 100's of tyres over the years,tractor we ran 3 cars and a big Sprinter....etc....

Mick ...look at penu's on line via google...some tyre companies will sell direct and u can name the dealer u want to fit them...
could save u loads.....

Nice bead breaker, but couldn't you have used the bucket on the JCB to break the bead?

It is not getting a new set - I doubt I have I done 200miles on the Conti's

I must forget about it - it annoys me - nearly £500 worth of tyres and they are pooh!

@Mick Annick , I ordered my tyres from pieces auto 24 or whichever one I have an account with, checked the local garage were happy to fit them, saved about 40% on normal tyre garage prices.

Thanks Mat, I use them (or one of the many other names they trade under, they are part of Autodoc), for car bits - have found them very good so far - had to return some brake shoes that didn’t fit - my fault, they refunded the full cost and the postage.

Take them off - put them on the tyre rack at my workshop - sell them to a customer? I would need to find a stone deaf customer who needs the same tyre size.

I will live with it...

I know you probably don't agree with part worns & I don't either. But bet you any money someone would buy them!

Nothing wrong with part worns. Better a part worn quality tyre than the cheapest and nastiest Chinese or Indian import.
After all how many people who buy a used car immediately change all the tyres?

Modern tyres are rubbish. My latest van 3.5ton citroen had continentals on from new all 4 went out of shape. Changed them to Goodyear, the same result so now I just fit the cheapest that ATS do. They still go out of shape but don't cost as much. In 108,000 miles I've yet to wear one tyre up.every one out of shape or puncture that's not repairable.

That's true, and all tyres are partworn as soon as you drive on them, but what if they've been run flat, smashed up kerbs etc so the tyre has hidden damage?

A good point but again that could easily have happened to a car you buy 2nd hand.

When I bought my van it was fitted with Chinese dichfinder tyres all round. When driving it it suffered from torque steer & under braking it wandered a bit. I thought the tracking was badly out and causing this problem. The grip was poor & they were also quite noisy!

Two tyres were getting low so I priced around for tyres. Nearly every place only had Chinese van tyres in stock, didn't stock named brand tyres as they were too expensive and nobody was buying them.

One place had Kuhmos in stock & @£90 they were only £20 per tyre more than the Chinese ones. I rate Kuhmos as a good mid range tyre, I've had them on cars before so I fitted 2 to the front of the van. As a bonus a mate from school is the manager so I got a healthy discount as well.
I got the tracking checked & it was 100% spot on - got it free as well!

The new tyres cured all the problems, the van tracks & drives perfect, no road noise & the grip is superb. Also very impressed with the grip in the recent snow & ice. Needless to say that I'll be fitting another 2 Kuhmos when I get some money saved!

I am not that against part worns - I have taken car tyres from one car and fitted them to my own car. I am a car mechanic - nobody does "make to and mend" better than me!

What I don't like about bought in part worn tyres is how they stretch/pack them to reduce volume when shipping.

I would not sell part worns to the general public - I just would not!

They do this so they can get three times more into a shipping container.
