Car trailer licence queery

Ladies and gents, I've been driving around far too long with a trailer + load that is way over my towing allowance on a std licence.

I would like to obtain a trailer licence, but it seems a bit expensive just to tow a trailer. If I pass my class 1 hgv will I be able to tow a proper trailer with a car, or will I still have to do a car trailer test? I had a look on the DVLA website but I got lost.

Yes I know HGV licences are very expensive but I will have a need for one in a few years anyway.

Yes a class one license will cover you for car and trailer , I think you will be over qualified , mind you I think a tractor unit and 45' trailer is easier to reverse than a car and Halfords type trailer with the axle in the middle

Yes it is , it's a b+E licence for car trailer, will cost you about £3k to get a class 1 licence these days

Yes I would be a little over qualified for what I want at the minute, I will require a HGV licence in a few years so it makes sense to do it earlier rather than waste money on a trailer test that will get bettered when I eventually do my test in a year or two.

As above CE will also up grade your B to BE (if you have them it will also upgrade your D1 & D licences too). When you stop taking the medicals to renew your CE you will still keep your BE.

The BE test is exactly the same as the CE test just in a different vehicle, so you could use it as a way of gaining test experience.

Depending on how soon you need the CE & how soon you need the BE using it as a stepping stone might still be sensible.

As mentioned to get to CE you will spend about £3k as you have to do C first.

For a full two day all inc course we charge £555 for BE.
