I remember so well buying the first TomTom back around ~2002 and thinking it was the very best product I'd ever bought. Later TomToms were not as good ( "de-featured") but I still thought they were better than Garmin.

For various reasons, I really don't like using smartphones as satnav's, so I guess I may be looking for my next TomTom at some time.

You have to go into google maps settings and "Enable Offline Navigation" + "Enable Offline Directions" then it works offline too with the maps you downloaded.

I run google maps right on the car's headunit (its android based), and its 4g sim coverage is patchy so I have all this set up. Waze too.

As I said, exactly how I navigated around the western states of the USA.

You should be OK if you haven't got an Audi, they seem to block satnavs. Anyone else experienced this?
