todays cars will be the classics of todays children, just like music changes through the decades

SNooper, most classic cars are from the 1960's or earlier because of their relative simplicity. Modern cars don't rust as much but they get scrapped due to the failure of complex and expensive systems of parts and faults that cannot be traced or if they are are uneconomic to repair, 2004 diesel Mondeos for example.

Plus the inherent dullness and sameness of modern cars. Stuff from the 1960's was very characterful and different. Not so modern cars. Let's preserve what deserves to be preserved and let the disposable be disposed and re-cycled. After all, modern cars are designed to be re-cycled.

A little while ago I visited the local scrapyard - first time in ages. I was a little surprised to see 52 reg was the most common ! Also most vehicles were completely rust, rot and accident free meaning they were probably scrapped for a mechanical reason.
Ever been annoyed by the almost invisible haze that is difficult to remove on the inside of your windscreen ? This is the result of the polymers in the plastic and the reason why they become brittle with age etc as the polymers leach out. So biggest problem in the future with restoring what are todays cars will not be the metalwork but the plastics. Already try and find an uncracked dash top for something like a Capri and you will see plastic are already proving a problem for restorers.

i fully understand what you are saying but you can guarantee that some people will want to preserve some of todays cars just like the xr2 and xr3i, I doubt it will be on the same scale as the 60s and so on but it will happen

Lots of otherwise service able cars were killed off under the scrappage scheme. I expect a few of them are languishing in scrap yards still.

Lots of cars with component failure are scrapped because of Labour charges, for the majority of people on this forum that isn't a consideration. We don't have to pay labour so can keep the classics of tomorrow going for a lot less than most people ever could. There is always ways round issues but time input is costly from a garage point of view, hence the car is scrapped.
Or the all too common miss diagnosis resulting in hundreds of pounds being spent in the wrong direction, meaning there is no equity left in the car to address the actual problem.

People are already collecting and making garage princesses of many 80's,90's cars.

Look at the prices on something like a Lancia Delta evo1 / evo2 / finale they are getting insane - we are talking the best are nudging up to 50k a serious collectors car now.

Anything with the word cosworth on.

V6 Clio's which are very modern in reality have already hit rock bottom on there value and are going up. And come to think of it the clio Williams are also big hits now.

Peugeot 205 gti's

The list goes and on.

Fully respect someone who is into 60's cars but there is a big audience for new classics as people get older and look back at fond memories of cars of there youth.

even the ford capri's are now reaching thousands, I would imagine some of the fiat grande punto's like the t jet and the abarth to be collected in the near future

i know a lad that is into vw, has a split screen and a mk1 gti, but hasn't long bought and r32 as hr says it will be the next hot classic golf to replace the g60
