Car Radio Backup Battery

Yes, after I posted I spotted the bezel still there, and its out now but still no joy. The JVC tools are so thin, appreciably less than 1mm. Certainly cannot get behind it. There's a guy in ebay using butter knives and the radio throws itself out!. Given that it's the holiday, should I make some tools out of something a bit thicker?

Good observation. If you look inboard of the metal cassette, there are two cutouts on the centre line that look to be the same size as the extractors

It's out! But, I have to say I wouldn't have got it without your help. I used to think I was a fairly competent person, but I really do think I've reached an age where I've totally lost my edge .

Th B+ line is the yellow wire with the plastic-covered bullet connector. All I need now is a suitable orifice for a wire through bulkhead.

My JVC radio takes ~2.5mA when idle.

So, it's playing quietly and taking ~800mA, then I switch off the radio, switch off ignition, remove key, get out of car and lock doors, it's then taking ~2.5mA. Clearly if that's taken away, the memory is lost.

I'm going to try put in a separate feed wire that goes to the battery rather than the disconnect device. The problem is that there is so much stuff obscuring the bulkhead esp on the passenger side. I made one small hole in a plastic blanking plug, pushed about 4ft of wire through; couldn't see or feel any trace of it; there is a big "air-mixing box" for the ventillation system in the way. If I can get the car on my mate's lift after Xmas, maybe the lower bulkhead might offer a solution.

I might think about a solar panel; can anyone recommend a make or supplier?

poke something stiff through, bit of mig wire, tig wire, etc. etc,

it might still coil up like the wire you pushed through... but they normally kink/poke out sideways somewhere

Ok, but in the last hour I've found that in 5 seconds, I can get wires from the radio through to the glove box, and there I could put an 8x AA battery holder with dry cells (they'd last ages at 2.5mA), or I think I might find a small sealed lead acid battery or maybe some old NiCads .

Of course, also up by that bulkhead is the AC heat exchanger and the radiator for the heating, and I think I should stay well away from those 24 year old bits .

I have a few ring ones for the bikes to maintain batteries. They live up in the workshop roof under clear corrugated and keep the batteries topped up. One per bike.

I wasn’t hopeful to be fair but they’re 5 years old and they are good enough for what they are.

I don’t know your circumstances but you could probably bodge one up outside or at least looking at the sky and run the lead to the car?

I turned our works radio off for the same reason, 90% of the presenters were just self gratifying bell ends and just wound me up listening to them!.

I used to think that about the knobs on company two-way radios, too.

I spent maybe 45 minutes yesterday and 30 minutes to day and there's probably another 60 minutes needed. It's more about convenience than time. Before you go you look for stations you have to get out of the Demo mode it starts up in, so ; button - menu, button-menu etc etc..... It was quite an expensive radio, but it's not user friendly at all.
