Haha if only it were that simple. I replaced the thermostat housing on this van on 30th April (just gone) as the original stat housing had cracked where the seal lives. Now two days ago the replacement housing has split and resulting coolant loss has boiled the engine and the head face is cooked, piston 1 has a chunk missing out of the crown - I suspect its nipped in the bore, liner also damaged.
The stat housing I fitted was a brand new but non genuine item. So in the first instance its my responsibility to get the van back up and running, naturally I will be pursuing a claim for my labour and expenses.

Funnily enough all the yards here require the old engine back. Must be something to do with numbers on the books. Seemed totally unconcerned what stae it was in, or what bits still attached.

Edit: But they give a 3 month guarantee on the used unit.

probably tracability of where the engines have been scrapped and disposed off. oil contamination ect correct procedures

Think they're shipping them off to Africa in actual fact. By the container load, less to do with paperwork than profit.

Might be to do with. The vehicle been "Scrapped" opposed to broken. DVLA Traceability? The amount of hoops you have to jump through suppling info on all parts used to reg a new build is I'm told is crazy, but maybe necessary to stop car theft. And as past victim I'm all for that.

European paperwork infecting yet another area of our lives, is what it is.
I had it straight from a used battery guy - I asked him for a couple of semi-dead batteries to fiddle with and he said once he's taken a battery in he can't give it back out, but if I could give him another totally dead one, he'd let me have a semi-dead, to keep his numbers straight.

because it doubles the proffit selling all the parts separately

Scrap value?

In one and some ... the fact its easy revenue knowing some old units are worth a lot more then the surcharge
If you sell a £1500 diesel engine most peeps would rather keep the old unit, so you get to keep their XYZ surcharge
Expensive engine could also mean expensive surcharge
If they give you the old unit back you've a good chance of selling it for core, or break it down and sell the parts again
Some old units you could easily make a few hundred at least, head, crank, dual mass flywheel etc !
Double bubble ..
Or if its knackered you sling it in the scrap and earn that way, even more if its an all alloy block/head !
Either way its an extra earner to charge a surcharge on old units for breakers now

Well I voted with my feet. Got one from ebay. Would be highly tempted to take a sledge hammer to the 'old unit' if it ever becomes a country wide trait to demand it back. Would understand if they were re-conditining them.

Not in this instance - local farm store getting bogged down with bureaucratic bolleaux.
Since they sell fencing and tractor batteries, they're obliged to take the used ones in - in any amount, according to EU rules. As an access point for re-cycling they have to immediately generate some bumph and account for a battery once it hits their bin. Of course, it's making money for the real recyclers, who get all this collection done for free.
