Modern demisting, heated mirrors, heaters that work when its cold, decent headlights, brakes that work from cold
Just a few "modern" features
If you want to drive an old car without these features then feel free, just don't moan and complain about those that do

The only thing I don't like about modern cars is the DPF system, I can live with catalytic converters and EGR valves but why fit something that is destined to fail if you don't do the mileage required ? I don't see anyone complaining about people who drive modern cars, just the cars themselves. My niece had a Renault with stop start and the battery died so we fitted the one from her Peugeot Partner parked on the drive just to get her to work. She just kept using it without the stop start but it soon stopped again and wouldn't start, dead battery again so we had to fit an AGM and all back to normal.

I have permanently programmed my BMW start/stop off using the Carly app. I can't see what good it does turning a 6 cylinder 3 litre twin turbo diesel on and off !!! BTW it's 395 BHP and I average 45 mpg :-))

When my father bought new or nearly new Vw campers the original battery had done 7 years.
I’ve bought motorcycle and car batteries off Tayna,admittedly all at least 5 years ago ,and been pleased,indeed the camper one is 7 years old and ok,the others have moved on ,so can’t comment now.

My car doesn't have stop/start but I worked out it costs between £1-2/hour in fuel at tickover at current fuel costs. So would be between 25 and 50 hours of "off" time before it would pay back.
I'm not sure personally I'd ever manage that much but might be possible if all your driving was in town and stop/start didn't annoy the hell out of you so much you turn it off!
Stop/start is largely a con however, it's there because 50% of the NEDC test was with the car stationary so effectively removing that made a reasonable improvement on mpg and hence CO2. Entirely there for the manufacturers to game the emissions tests.
In the really real world you could have a car without stop/start that actually had better mpg and CO2 "while moving" yet was taxed more.

Back in the day i had a knackered old mk2 escort with start stop technology, it would never start and was a bugger to stop 
I go for yuesa batteries mainly from halfords on the trade card with a 5 year warranty, only had 1 fail and they swapped it.

* reasons:
1. The wear on the battery, starter and engine generally from constantly stopping and starting must be immense (see original post)
2. It must save 1/3 a thimbleful of diesel per year
3. It never seems to work well (on an automatic, anyway)
4. All of the above smells like a solution looking for a problem that practically speaking doesn't exist

Have you seen the prices of cars that dont have them modern gadgets ha ha. so a lot of folk have no choice. head lights i 100% disagree with. if folk are getting worse at seeing then maybe e bu there not. Modern is making folk lazy. soon folk will have no clue how to drive or avoid an accident. imagine having to take control of a car that fails and it goes into `driver has to drive mode` ha ha love to be there when that happens they wont have a clue. Still AA will be busy lol

Shock news: People on internet forum disagree with each other!
I had a narrow miss a few years ago with my 2006 L200, not seeing something in the road until the last moment. Since swapping to a newer car that has HID headlamps the difference is... night and day...
I'm not getting worse at seeing, nor am I lazy - some modern improvements have considerable benefit (but not stop/start!)

If you have difficulty seeing its best to drive to the conditions. I am may be wrong again but i dont remember ever seeing any news etc on non HD lights being dangerous and unsafe. You mite see more with HD lights or what ever but the other folk around you see less.

DPF systems are designed for average mileage use with a good leeway, if you're outside of that bell curve, then you've chosen or been sold the wrong type of engined car.
The system hasn't 'failed' it has been unable to regen. due to requirements not being met and will flag a warning on the dash eventually, it's when the warnings asre ignored and a forced regen cannot be carried out that things get expensive. Autostop 'faults' are similar, we get vehicles in with 'autostop not working' concerns. Autostop is working fine, it is preventing engine stop to protect the discharged battery or keep the high electrical load maintained - in other words, it's doing what it was designed to do. Most vehicles have the ability to record usage stats, journery length, charge input, parking time etc. most of the ones with 'autostop not working' type concerns have a history of journey times <10 minutes which is never going to put back the charge taken from the battery just by starting the engine, especially if those 10 minutes were spent sitting in traffic, engine at idle speed on the school run...

Yuasa for me too, my last one failed literally a couple of weeks before the g'tee expiry and was replaced without question. Naturally (iirc) the new one only carried the balance of the warranty, but I think that's standard across most products.
The original h/lights on my e39 were downright dangerous. OK on full beam, but go to dipped and they were as effective as a pair of candles. Upgraded to Xenons and... well... night and day. This wasn't just me and my eyes, but an acknowledged shortcoming in design.
Lots of response there, thanks guys. I checked it with a cheap Multimeter ( 6am Friday engine cold) it showed 11.5 volts, when running it's showing 14+ volts.
It looks like I'm going bite the bullet and shell out over 25 pints worth and buy the correct one.
