Capri Wheels

Has anybody ever stripped a set of capri Wheels? I'm wondering if they are just painted or if they have any powder coating on them, most modern cars of the last 20 years have a powder coat primer hence them need for chemical stripping or if the coating is easy blasted back to bare metal.

Anybody know?

If they're steel and original they will be primed with paint and should blast easily.

Not fully stripped, but worked on plenty of Cortina's and Capri's, both the basic steel wheels and the Rostyle and it was always a case of wet and dry, a bucket of soapy water and sore fingers for a week.

They went down to bare metal fairly easily for both styles so I doubt it's any challenging surface.

Never worked on any alloys, the Rostyle were just painted steel

capri ally wheels can be blasted with supafine grit and finished off with kiln dried sand ready to paint but i hope u have a 6mm jet and a 90cfm compressor @ 90 psi or u will be there forever

That's why I'm asking, painted steelies are no bother but if they have a tough coating you get them chemically stripped. If i had 90cfm I wouldn't need to ask

Yes... But everything went in the dip tank, certainly was a stoved on finish but not quite like modern powdercoat. I cant remember now how fast they stripped, but some of the older wheels could be a pain to strip.

Sounds like the older wheels have a powder coat primer as well then, chemicals it will have to be. Thank you kindly

I've only ever seen powder primer on modern alloys, I've blasted loads of Ford & BL steel wheels without a problem. Stripping in a tank will still make the job easier though, but you must remove the tyres and valves.

That's what I though, but these ain't steelies otherwise no problem. Kinda know about having to remove tyres and valves, I'm powder coating them. Strip tank will be easier, but I have to outsource that at present. I'm having a heated tank done for me as I won't use mc/dcm and hf acid mixes or benzyl alcohol strippers. Cheap set up but not for me.

He also had a 125LC, which was an eye-opening revelation to a MZ250 rider.

I hope they are something tasty, nice late plate 2.8 or the 3.0 swan song. Do like the last of the Capri's, i was only knee high then.

Sounds like we need a powder coaters directory? And our own section to help promote the industry like stateside.

From memory the pepperpot cars had 13" wheels with a 4 speed gearbox and no LSD. A mate had a Stan Stephens tuned RD125LC mid 80's and it surprised me how quick it reached 90.

Good bit of knowledge there, reminds me of the lads on the line in the factory I worked a few years ago that did a great job of my homers!

I knew nothing of cars then, not much more now really, but it did look very nice.

I got a Supa5 Stannned, ISDT 33bhp. Never got the pipe sorted but it went off the original 80mph clock......on a private road naturally.
