Capacitor identification

My SDS AEG drill went pop and started turning when the trigger was not pressed.
Anyway I have taken it apart and found the problem, well I hope its the problem.
The cap looks like it blew.
A few numbers are missing, does any one have a clue to what I need to replace it with?
It is a 3 wired cap. pics to follow.

it sure is but it looks different in the pics worth a punt at £8

It's a suppression capacitor (3 in one package): 0.18uF + 2 x 2400pf

Something like this should be OK if you can't find a direct equivalent:

AD Safety capacitor X2 Y2 300vAC (0.22uF group1)+ 2x (2200pF group 2)MXY–ref:792 | eBay

AD MXY type -X2Y2, 0.22uF X2 K, +2X2200pF Y2M, 300vAC. Safety capacitor X2 Y2 300vAC (0.22uF group2 X2 K) + 2x (2200pF group 2 Y2M). Suppressor used frequently in power tools, etc. A High Quality Capacitor.

If the manufacturer is offering a 2 wire (single capacitor) replacement, then that should be OK too.

The drill should "work" without it, but the brushes will arc like mad, and I wouldn't run it for long.

thats more like it, I have already ordered the AEG one I guess the wire that contacts the motor body will just be redundent with the 2 wire version.

I suspect that the two 2400 pF 'extra' capacitors in the original are for radio interference suppression. They probably connect from frame/ ground to live and neutral.

The sketch below shows how the capacitor array is connected within a typical metal cased power tool..It’s primarily there to prevent emi going back up the supply cable, nothing to do with preventing sparking at the brushes ( that’s a commutation issue with armature/brush array). The large value cap is Cx and the 2 smaller caps are Cy, where Cx is across the incoming supply, and Cy connects between the supply legs and Earth. If either of the Cy caps becoming leaky, they can cause tripping on earth leakage, if Cx is failing short circuit it could/will cause mcb trips.

Further to what Chippie wrote, the original suppressor capacitor is marked "X1Y2". A type "X" capacitor is typically placed across the AC power lines to filter noise, and a type "Y" is connected from Live or Neutral to Earth.

A capacitor that is rated at "X1" can withstand an impulse or spike of 4,000 volts ( typically used in industrial applications ) and an "X2" can safely handle 2,500 volts ( typically for domestic use ).
Where the capacitor is feeding to ground, a rating of "Y1" means 8,000 volts, and "Y2" is 5,000 volts.

It must help alleviate some of the emi caused by sparking. When used on a universal motor it's still connected across the commutator with the field windings connected to supply.

Update, capcator replaced by the ebay one with wires.

The drill works but it still turns over slowly without the trigger being pressed

Could be a faulty trigger as it has the speed controller also

What if you remove the cap? Still turns without the trigger being pressed?
