At the lowest shade setting of 6, when triggered, the lenses appear considerably darker than the "resting" or "off" state shade. The Truecolour helmet that I looked through passes noticeably more light in the "off" state, than the other two. I would guess that the Truecolour is at a shade 1 or 2 whilst the other two helmets I've tested might be something like a shade 3, in the "off" state.
what do they go to when they are actually off , not just in standby , I dont own a true color at the moment .
if hes in the same town within a short distance then sure. but driving for hours to figure out his lens is bright , no i couldnt do that. its a simple mask , a few quick checks should determine whats going on
That is their "off" state, I believe. Could I ask what makes you say that the autodarkening filter defaults to the dark state? Bear in mind that an autodarkening helmet sitting on a bench may well be being triggered into its dark state by flickering from overhead lighting. LED sources can be particularly prone to doing this, and arc lighting, too.

If you are getting your eyes tested please note that reading glasses will not be suitable for welding.
You are normally welding a lot further away from your eyes than when reading so the focal point will change.
On my last eye test my optician took this into consideration and gave me lenses that are a compromise between reading and welding distance.

I have checked several of my helmets and they are in their standby mode and only switch darker when they sense arc light. I have tried to get them to change with a bright LED torch and no change. I have both green and true colour helmets and both do the same, all have grind mode with shade (5-9) and weld mode shade (9-13). I mostly use 10, 11 and 12 shades, shade 10 in short arc mode .8 solid wire down to about 60amps. Shade 12 up to about 300amps. However used shade 13 on 380amps, was quite dark though. There would seem that there is a problem with the helmet if it is not changing or it is set in grind mode. We would need to look at the helmet (some pics) or the manual would need to be consulted. It would be rare for a helmet not to work

I always thought that the simplest way to test an auto-darkening welding helmet was by pointing a TV, hi-fi, VCR etc. remote control at it. Another way is with a flint-type cigarette lighter ( e.g. a Bic lighter ). LED lights sometimes work if you set them to reduced brightness - e.g. "50% mode" - because that causes them to flicker.

This sounds like a real issue, and it's good you aren't doing any load-bearing welds right now. It is definitely not safe to get arc eye often. You should look for a helmet that goes up to a Shade 13 or 14, especially if you stick weld

Mine works with a TV remote, but my LED converted strip lights won’t trigger it, the old fluorescent tubes used to before I swopped them.
the wee halogen downlighters trigger them too
There are tables that give the recommended filter shade according to what amps you are welding at and what process you are doing.
