cant get ANY penetration??

cant get any penetration WHEN WELDING
i have got a wheel i need to repair hears a pic

i just tryed to do a line on a old alternator and it wasent haveing any of it just welleding up the end of the torch evey time. i cleen the earth and the area had a play with wire fead and the amps i just cant get a weld just welleds up the end of the torch evey time

im good at welding i done loads i did some mig aloy at collage 3years a go and i got on relly well just cant seem to do it naw im fine when welding steel


any help tips????

Are you trying to MIG weld that?
That's a job for a TIG welder, you're wasting your time trying to mig weld it, it'll end up a right mess.

i know i would be nice if i could use a tig but i dont have access to one


i just wanted to welled it up with me mig grind it back the wet and dry it

cant think why is fouling the torch.
torch too close wire too slow
tension on wire to tight ally wire is soft could it be getting crushed by rollers

it might be to slow i think the wire fead is runing slower then normel i will try my other mig set some time this week see if i can get anying out of that one

dident relly have much time to play with it 2day but probley have a play with it on munday

Wire speed will be about twice what steel wire runs.

Keep the torch about 3/4" away from work.

Will start cold, so need to start well before the weld then grind off extra.

You are really going to struggle with a MIG set that is below 300 amps, you have a lot of material thickness there that just wants to soak all that heat up.
It will help to pre heat the material and swap from argon to a 25%argon/75%helium mix but to be honest I still think it is a non starter. I wouldn't consider MIG welding something like that unless I was using a pulsed MIG set.

As has been said before........it really needs to be TIG welded or you could be giving yourself all sorts of problems, I'd gladly do it for you but I see you are in Bedford, I'm sure one of the other guys on here would help you out if you asked nicely

Another reason why it might be burning back is if you are not using an oversized tip - aluminium wire expands a lot more with heat than steel wire and may jam in a standard-sized tip.

Or perhaps it is struggling to get through the liner?

As mentioned above, that lump of aluminium will take some power to heat it up.

yer i got a mate of mine to tig at his work 2day looks sweet naw i think its my welleder the wire speed seems to be playing up on it but i have got another one so im just going to use that from naw on hears some pics of it and them all finished :-)

i got a manifold with some cracks in it that i need to weld up soon so im going to have a play the the aloy on that some time soon on my other mig 200amp so it should be alright
