How much was sticking out of the chuck? If that was a shock rod it will have a hard chrome skin.

For a wee bit of I just uploaded a SloMo of the second part and you can see the swarf breaking away nicely.
Have also just done one with same feed per rev but with the depth of cut I would normally do, approx double of the previous. Away home now but will upload later on.

1" out of the the chuck. And yes it was a shock rod so its very possible the shiny skin had something to do with it. But I tried skimming it first then a full cut. I was actually just testing ( very quick un scientific test) for flex as I have not had time to check the lathe since I moved it. The tool seems to dig in occasionally with a lot of movement but I have produced decent work with it previously. That was in my 4 jaw. My 3 jaw appears bell mouthed. (When I noticed that he digging in randomly).
So I purchased another second hand 3 jaw.
(Which is what that was turned in)
I also have a collet chuck I need to fit on a backplate...... So I thought a quick check to see if it still dug in..... Before I attempt to turn the backplate for collet chuck.
I also thought I would post it up here to show instant results are not always achieve able.
What software you using?Getting quite good with the vids mate. We just need to hear a bit of that Scottish accent every now and then if your to start competing with our doubleboost.

Was just leaving the workshop when the phone rang so had to head round to a boat to find a wiring fault so got home even later. Quickly uploaded this but should have had some fade between sections I suppose.
Highly possible. Its a tool I grabbed off here or ebay. I will get stuff sorted and filed but my grandson needs to get the 30 hours nursery before I get my workshop life back. LolThe more I zoom in the more I would say it is knackered
It actually looks like an old style insert/chip breaker as well, often they were very material specific.
I was going to do that but today @#$%& I have taken my wife to doctors for a chest infection.
Got a free gift from screw fix and a tenners worth of metal cutting discs while they were on offer.
Removed a gas fire and replaced it with an electric one.
Fitted some mixer taps.
Mowed the lawns and coughed a lot
Looking forward too tommorow.

The bars came today.
They only sent nine and a half inserts though

I got the part in the 4 jaw chuck and (More by luck than judgement) clocked it in to less than a tenth of runout and started boring with the biggest bar. I was able to take 0.01" passes at a 4 thou feed with no chattering. I decided not to use coolant because it was flicking off everywhere with the bigger chuck (8" vs 5") and it was running out he back of the spindle.
The swarf was very manageable little coils which broke off and fell out of the bore without any persuasion, very happy with that.
I couldn't get a picture to show what the finish was like but it's nice and smooth, here's the finished article anyway.
I've got to make another, smaller, spacer before I can test it but it seems to fit very well. I'm not sure if I can rely on the pressure of the nut to keep it still or if it needs keying but I'll find out soon enough.
TL;DR Twenty quid well spent.

I have 10 of DCMT21.51I have those bars too @Maker , I did a thread on el cheapo toolsthey've served me well and I'm a machining cabbage so it's a wonder they're still alive
and tried to fi d a nice cheap bar to use them on.....even the chinese are putting up prices. I cant find one.

You would have to double check the designation of the insert though as it is American but I think they are DCMT 0702

Should check out J& L (MSC Direct now I think) They have been punting the Iscar Tang Grip blade and 10 inserts (with tool) for £99 plus VAT. Simply the best parting tool I have ever used. In fact I bought 3 sets and might go and buy another now I have just remembered about them
Further to this post, just to let you know they are on special again, £83 plus VAT so the £99 I mentioned before should have been incl VAT.

Pic below I couldnt use my VCMT tool becuase my cross slide does not have enough travel
only one I had would be CCGT alu inserts, this was a well used one that I gave a quick touch on the diamond wheel. Turns EN3 very nice and curls chips surprisingly well. Makes me think small lathes should only use alu inserts for everything.
