How much was sticking out of the chuck? If that was a shock rod it will have a hard chrome skin.I tested my lathe out today for a laugh...
I will post pics later, but I used old shock absorber rod and an insert but whilst I did not mess with setting I was not impressed with the initial finish...
1" out of the the chuck. And yes it was a shock rod so its very possible the shiny skin had something to do with it. But I tried skimming it first then a full cut. I was actually just testing ( very quick un scientific test) for flex as I have not had time to check the lathe since I moved it. The tool seems to dig in occasionally with a lot of movement but I have produced decent work with it previously. That was in my 4 jaw. My 3 jaw appears bell mouthed. (When I noticed that he digging in randomly). How much was sticking out of the chuck? If that was a shock rod it will have a hard chrome skin.

Highly possible. Its a tool I grabbed off here or ebay. I will get stuff sorted and filed but my grandson needs to get the 30 hours nursery before I get my workshop life back. LolThe more I zoom in the more I would say it is knackered
It actually looks like an old style insert/chip breaker as well, often they were very material specific.
I was going to do that but today @#$%& I have taken my wife to doctors for a chest infection.Id have a play with some fresh bar stock, and the same insert turned to the opposite corner.
Sometimes a scratched record finish is acceptable!

Should check out J& L (MSC Direct now I think) They have been punting the Iscar Tang Grip blade and 10 inserts (with tool) for £99 plus VAT. Simply the best parting tool I have ever used. In fact I bought 3 sets and might go and buy another now I have just remembered about them
