Can't believe what I've done ( vw 1991 polo gt window screen damage )

Cut long story short I've managed to knock over a mixing cup of 2k thinners over my 1991 vw polo gt front window screen and yes screen was not in car.

Results is damaged screen not all over but where I wiped it off with gusto it has misted smeared etc. I'm not happy with myself at this point.

I have polishing machine gear mops , pads etc. My question is can you use this equipment on the front of the window screen ?

Before anyone suggest buy new screen try finding one for 1991 car.

Advice on whats good to use ie cutting compound grades materials etc i can use.

Traditionally "Jewellers Rouge" was the compound used to polish minor defects so might work.

The thinners won't have touched the glass (but beware of getting them on the edge of the lamination).

Could it be that whatever you tried to wipe it off with had something on it that has dissolved in the thinners and been left on the screen?

I would cautiously try some more 2K thinners on a clean rag and see if that will clear off the misting.

Cerium oxide on a felt pad is my go-to. Glass is hard though, it takes a lot of effort which creates a lot of heat. Needs care to not crack the screen.

You have a very good point really can't remember if rag was clean or covered in oil.

You have not done any damage to the glass, not at all. But as mentioned above don't get any thinners near the edge, it will attack the lamination. Just get yourself a clean cloth and a bit of thinners and clean it up. No need to polish the glass at all (which brings it's own set of danger).

All worked out great from thinking I'd trash the screen and advice taken its fine. I used clean cloth and thinners smears now gone.

Funny how the panic takes over the reason in there stressful situations.

The note on cerium oxide is a good on though I use it' with a felt velcro pad for cleaning my log burner glass. Cleans piggy plastic in a blink (regulator gauge plastic etc)
