Thanks Diesel, no, more like the part that is sorta U bent with elongated holes in the ends as in the photo I uploaded. I'm almost sure this part is missing from my vice, it's the way it came as a gift but no good as it is because when you tighten it goes 'bang' and what should be in the jaws lands on the floor. got wise to moving my feet fast.
I believe that U piece you're talking about is from a wood vice, probably a 52E or something. I'm linking some photos of what the arrangement should look like. It's very simple. This is a Record 36, and it looks like the guide was cast.
But then here on another one in the series, there's just a piece of flat bar screwed on:
Better photo of the release bar engaged in the half nut stem. I built up the bottom of the half nut stem groove a bit some time ago thinking that it was too loose. Didn't help me any.
Have you tried looking at the washers on the screw? It could be out of alignment, there should be a brass one at the front that could be worn down making it jump.
Thank you very much Johnseat, just the same as mine only mine looks to have had a lot more use. Think all that is for it is a new half nut or a screw and nut from another vice.

Interesting - mine is Acme thread, I didn't know the qr ones were Buttress. Makes sense now, that popping is one of the threads jumping back. I can't find a pic of the washer, only of it on the screw. There is no bush because the screw should be supported at the end of the case slide with the taper pin through it. It should be absolutely tight so you're only just able to get the taper pin through the locking ring and through the screw. This is the only photo I have, pre restoration The brass washer is still on the screw, and the locking ring is on the concrete
Yep the qr has a tapered thread, the screw is held in the vice by 2 screws in the cover near the handle(as in Johnseat's photo), there is a collar on the screw there. No tapered pin through the other end.
I have a Record wood vice (quick release) and the bits in post#21 look similar. I was short a few bits and contacted Record via Axminster. They said I should buy a fresh vice as the cost of the bits was close. Thank you, but I like the original and I will take the proper bits. Natch, I have barely used it since, but it and my Record No. 8 were free in the first place, sort of. Bloke turned up with big plans and asked me to fab up a big work bench to mount the vices on. I did, but he never came back.
