I bought a socket extension 1/2" x 1 1/2" long, to allow a spanner to be used, so square, rather than hex, but it did the trick. If anyone's interested, they were:

No, I have mine. I just couldn't find them in the UK under the US name - I wanted a few for a work application, to be supplied with a service tool kit for a particular machine to use with a modified SKF lock nut socket on a whittek-higgins lock nut due to limited space.
I found a Kennedy version of the Beta ones listed above for a fiver - Cromwell are one of our suppliers so easy to get, so cancelled my plea for help - but obviously not before some of you saw it - so thank you
(SKF lock nut socket 65 quid. Ouir mod to remove a tang in our adjustment cell and remove SKF branding - 20 quid? Genuine socket for the lock nut in question,with our discount via our US company - $1142.40 !!! I guess they don't make very many, so each is a special.)
