Can you use Cellulose Paint over POR15 ?

As above can seem to get a definitive answer on this one, have looked at the tie coat primer from por15 but states not for cellulose paint

so what are my alternatives

I was planning to strip my engine bay back to bare metal then use the por15 process
then top coat the visiable areas with cellulose but this doesnt seem to be an option

any help would be greatly appreciated

my thoughts are dont use por15 , in my experiance it only sticks well on blasted or heavily pitted steel, pretty much peels off smooth ish metal

clean it all up best you can ..then epoxy primer or etch

thanks do i need to treat the seal seams or is the primer enough ????

My experiance with POR15 has been similar to Steveo3002.

If you do want to put cellulose over POR15 you can dust the surface of the POR15 with a thin coat of cellulose primer while the POR15 is still tacky. Then proceed to cover normally once it is fully dry.

clean the metal ...primer of your choice ..seam seal any gaps that you want water in

You need to remove ALL the rust and then etch prime or epoxy prime. Rust converters are treatments are a waste of money none of them work for more than a few months, and I have tried them all!

Sorry for the questions but i am new to this and am struggling to get my head round all this


if i am using cellulose paint is there s specific primer i must use or do i just use this over the etch or epoxy and then there high build more confusion

Use high build celly primer under the top coat. If the now rust free surface is pitted you may also need to apply 1K stopper to fill the tiny pits. Then prime again and sand down with 400- 800 grit before top coat.

Celly benefits from an intermediate sand.

I would etch/ epoxy prime before filling. Just one coat. Seam sealer is only needed in gutters and seams in top of the car and on the underbody.

Any etch is fine with cellulose, ask at your paint supplies shop about epoxy/ cellulose compatability.

id say seam sealer is used pretty much on all joints that see weather

check the info on the seam sealer some are recomended not to be used directly onto etch primer as there could be some residual acid left that may cause the sealant to fail prematurely

Epoxy will be fine with celly, do a good couple of coats to get coverage, scuff it up for a key. Granny/eggs etc but epoxy is 2k, isocyanates h&s etc. If you want it super smooth lay some hi-build onto the epoxy before the colour.

There are 2k and 1k etches, just get the latter so there's no activator with it.

so 2k primer is dangerous an dwell as 2k paint - so i need 1 k etch and cellyl self build primer
