The key is to always be a comfortable as you can get, if that includes sitting down, sit down

I don't need an excuse to park it if the work can be done on the bench while sat on my stool.

He said every time he looked I was leaning on something.
What he didn't understand was I was used to welding out of position, And believe me if you can make your life easier by leaning your head/shoulder/hip/elbow/knee or what ever on something solid, do it.
Sometimes a vertical up run can be say an hour ,get comfortable!

If there were ladies present it would be very bad form to sit while welding.

What's this question about? If you are welding you need the fullest and easiest control of the electrode or the torch and usually, if you are sitting it's easier than if you are standing because you are putting less effort into just maintaining your position. Would you try to write while other than sitting if you had a choice, even if you were wearing fire retardant clothes?

I think he refers to spatter when quoting that. Probably why its been explained as bad. Hot spatter dropping down between your legs.

As others have said; weld in whatever position you feel most comfortable with, in whatever position you have to weld in.
You will soon know if spatter is a problem, in which case you change position

Be aware of where you sit though... you probably don't want to risk spatter and molten metal landing in your lap.

Some years ago I worked with students in the art school sculpture dept , some of them had very little confidence using any tools I would see them struggling with stuff sawing cutting and welding etc , and then get asked to help and get the "oh jeff you make it look easy". My top tip was always get yourself balanced and comfortable ...

if I am working on lots for small components I work sat down, I set everything up so I can reach it easily and always wear a leather apron and check that it is covering the nether regions properly.

Obviously your talking with some sort of fixture moving the work downwards as you weld because you will have to stand before long running uphill for an hour

OK heavy plate multi run you are there for a while, and although leaning I do move to reposition myself as I'm traveling. Good enough?

whats this about being comfy when welding out of position......

i allways get at comfy as possible but that allways seems to translate to being in an incredily uncomfortable position but one that i can bear for just long enough to complete said weld.

biggest problem i have is after a day of it my neck is knackerd

+1 get a leather apron, comfort is necessary if you're going to produce consistent welds, just mind where the spatter's going.

My granddad was in ww1, Spent a long time in Palestine, Never ever said what he got up to military wise, But he did say, if you're going into any of the towns/villages, they were not allowed to go alone. Always go in a bunch with your mates to watch your back, Reckoned the arabs would cut your throat just to steal what you had in your pockets or take your watch.
