Can you put a value on this?

Hi all I have put this here as it isn't an ongoing project. This is something that I made over the last few months out of bits of scrap & a plank off an old pallet. Me & some mates were discussing the potential value of it but could not agree on a value. I am just interested as to what value you all think?

Shotgun shells have a fast burning smokeless black powder kinda thing in them..
But that might just turn it into shrapnell..

Cordite is what you will find in shotgun shells, rather than black powder which is more likely in found in bangers. The change in charges considerably reduced the 'smoke of war' on the battlefield, hence the name 'smokeless charge'. Also.. cordite burns slower that BP.

Probably not far off.

It all boils down to what people see it as...

A nice ornament: may not even make £20, lot's of imported stuff at low prices
A replica/collectors piece: probably not, collectors seek accuracy of replication.
Hand made craft: Possibly it's best option for achieving it's true worth..

It's a nice item that will probably always be worth more to the maker than most other people.

What do you mean cruel, you bully, lol, whilst someone has took many hours to make it, it's very non descript. Like has been said it probably be worth more to the maker,

one of the lads I did my time with made one around that size from brass for the cannon itself, stainless spoked wheels and the wooden sides were made from some rare wood, might have been sono or something similar. he sold it for 40 quid after it being on a few sites for over 2 months, he took the best offer. same thing kept popping up when offers were made, its just a small cannon, not a replica of a larger or historical one

Oh and at first I thought £50 then after the mug was positioned within shot £100 BUT only if it fires and smashes stuff to bits!!

have u ever seen a home made cannon fire??i doubt it. i know someone who made one and fired a 10mm ball bearing out of one fastened in a vice . it blew backwards and went through the side of the shed and that was just the cannon , the ballbearing went through the shed and buried in a brick wall . and for using shotgun cartriges dont even try

Yeah done a similar daft thing:

When I was an apprentice we made one about 9" long, used the powder from a couple of 321 bangers and filled it with bits off a nibbler machine.

Clamped it to a shelf and put a bit of paper on the storeroom wall a metre away, the result was a large hand sized hole in the corrugated (probably asbestos) wall.

Experiments are so care free when you are young and daft.

have u ever seen a home made cannon fire??i doubt it. i know someone who made one and fired a 10mm ball bearing out of one fastened in a vice . it blew backwards and went through the side of the shed and that was just the cannon , the ballbearing went through the shed and buried in a brick wall . and for using shotgun cartriges dont even try

My older brother told a similar story about one of their cannon on wheels, a big bang and a big hole in the fence, not from the ball bearing but the cannon! Took a while to find all the cannon remains apparently and the ball bearing was deeply embedded in a tree.


As kids we used to go up on the Army training grounds around Bisley and collect any spent training ordnance, always good to trade with at school! Occasionally we would find the odd live .762 blank and hand it over to my Father but being kids the odd one slipped through the net. I drew the short straw for being first to test fire one in a vice and whack the primer with a nail. Without a barrel to fire into the end would splay open and the spit pieces of brass shrapnel out and the percussion in a 6x8 shed is quite memorable to this day. (I wore appropriate safety gear for a child in the 1970's.)

Did the 303 blank in the vice thing, the percussion cap came off and went through the 1" planking that made the garage roof, dad finally got the roof repaired a few years ago . Stil never fessed up. How we got through the 70s with all our body parts more luck than judgement. Actually went by bus to Glasgow to see AC/DC at the Apollow wearing a live bullet belt

Couple of classmates at school didn't make it though. They were on the old army training grounds towards the south coast and one of them picked up a land mine. His mate told him to put it down gently, but it went off, killing both of them. The third guy told the story, as he was a bit further away. Another time, we were suddenly cleared out of school and a bunch of brown jobs came in. Seems we were all swotting while two of us had live morters in their desks. Since we got yearly lectures by the fuzz about what not to touch, the rest of us thought them idiots. This was in the 60's.
Of course we built guns and cannons. Destroyed a few doors and other stuff. I was impressed by the fact that a Sten gun cost 7sh.6pence. So built one in the school workshops. Only .22, as that was easily available. Always jammed after the first shot, needed a bit more development But we did have a war souvenir MP40 (Schmeisser) at home. Be looking at life without parole nowdays for that.....
