So this was back in the day....I know better now!
Was one of the winters where we got all the snow...late 1990. Had the brilliant idea of removing the remote fob ...running the car to warm it up...locking the car and having breakfast without anyone stealing the car. On the Celica you have to do it by exiting the car through the passenger door and locking it by holding the latch.
After breakfast....turned out when the car is running the remote is disabled
Luckily it was a 1993 Celica...one look at the bent hanger and the doors fell open .
All you need is to use the key to open the boot to get the towing loop from the toolkit
Surely they need the ignition on to have circuits energised?A sharp whack on the front tow loop with a lump hammer will pop the doors open on some cars, they think they’ve been in a crash and the engine kill shuts off and the doors unlock.
Or so a friend told me couple of years ago.
Wow,you had a 1993 celica in late 1990!So this was back in the day....I know better now!

Old wives tail. The vacuum system works a servo / solenoid just like the electric systems and no connection to the key apertureUsed to be half a tennis ball over the lock on some cars with vacuum operated central locking. . . . bop and all the locks operated . . .

I had a Mk1 escort estate for a while, I was given it. My mates then GF had it in London & it was stolen, found by the police, stolen from the police ....... they said we left it locked, mates GF said so did I! Recovered again, given to me, my wife used it for a bit, left it in the car park, someone tried to steal it! & got it stuck down a bank trying to drive it away in the dark. You could open that & start it with a nail file, literally anything. I understand the person who had of me lost it again. An escapologist Escort! There was a time when your Ford key could open a lot of other Fords. That was certainly the case with my Mark II Cortina.
