If you "accidentally" drop a hammer on an electricity meter or a gas meter, I suspect how it communicates is going to be the very least of your problems.....

If the meter stops communicating then usually the energy supplier will either contact you or send you an estimated bill.
AFAIK if the meter goes faulty, it is typically the electronics that pack in so the display won't work and/or it won't communicate/record.

If you have intentionally tampered with the meter, then it would be classed as theft.

Not for water, but on electricity I got shafted with a fried meter on the workshop line not recording, for the three months following they based it on their standard measurements, they estimated 4 grand, took me months to sort it out, eventually got it back to the reality, but it was me who had to prove it was their error... even explaining to them that even if all the workshop kit ran flat out for 8 hours a day, it wouldn't come close... ball ache of the first order...

I met 2 people last year (unrelated meetings) who refused to have electric blankets on the bed or have bedside lights next to the bed - due to the electrical energies given off by the electrical circuits.

I live next to a rough field so hypothetically I could divert my gutters over the fence instead of down the drain and get a discount for surface water... best not let them find out that I empty my dehumidifier down the loo though

You're better off "accidentally" dropping a spoon on it, the meter still communicates, but doesn't cost you anything

plastic is bloody lethal for static and holding a charge . i get a belt sometimes getting in my motor and the spark jumps across . wagons getting filled with grain blown in have an earth clamp and lead fitted to the truck to an earth point to discharge it

When I lived in Thailand eons ago there was a common trick of installing a 'shunt' across the meter, to reduce the bill. I never tried it but it appeared to be a resistor hooked up like the spoon is, but more discreetly I assume. You could get various sized resistors depending on how much you wanted the bill reduced.

A guy would come out and install it for you, for 500 baht. About a tenner back then.

I'd not be surprised if such things aren't going on in the U.K. now, with the current economy.....
