And good idea about the scrap door. The problem I see is if the door is good to the size I'd need it, it would probably be a good door id be cutting up.
Hey Dean. Mine is a 2002 Tii and it is slow going, as I am on a steep learning curve, like you I believe ? I also have a 1602 in need of a fair bit of work, but not as much and I certainly won't be spending as much on it !!!
But as Mike 109444 says. A door might be a good idea. I definitely have a door that you could use. I'll let you know when I return home later in the week. But you can keep the big sloppy kiss !!! ;-)
What model is your car ? and how bad is the other side ?
When there's access behind a hammer and dolly can also be used to do the shrinking instead of a wet rag although in the wrong hands a hammer has even more potential to make things worse than a wet rag. In either case when you start spot heating things (appear at least) to get worse before they get better
A mate of mine has a '58 Pontiac Star Chief which at some point suffered an engine bay fire and a portion of the bonnet got properly mishappen. Whoever owned it at the time bashed everything low and trowelled the plod in. Once the worst of the accesible damage (lots of bracing on the back of the bonnet) had been bumped up two of attacked it with an oxy torch and a wet rag and within an hour or so, while it was far from perfect, there was zero oil canning and things were close enough for a sensible skim of filler given that it was receiving a cheap satin black respray
That looks like what my roof needs. If I can shrink back the spots where it oil cans, I'd be more than happy.
I'm a complete novice at this type of thing. I've got the jist of it, but in practice it's a different ballgame. Mines a 75' 2002, and I've got a 75' 1602 lux. I thought this car looked a better one body wise, but now the 1602 doesn't look too sad up against this.
This one is nowhere near as desirable as your tii, so I'll be building it with non BMW flared arches seeing there's so much work to go into these ones, and a modern BMW colour.
I best get my finger out. I've got till May to build it!!
Your in luck Dean. That bit on the scrap shell is ok. Well, when I say OK !! I mean, it's better than yours !! ;-)
Some surface rust on the waistline trim holes, but on the whole very good. I'll cut it out for you this weekend, weather permitting, as it is outside. I'll drop you a PM to discuss the postage.
The pic was taken in the dark, so it isn't great, but you can see what you need.
I got similar plans for the 1602 Dean, eventually with turbo arches, rollcage, etc !!!!! I fancy dropping in an S2000 engine and 6 speed into it too, but we'll see if funds allow, the engines are starting to command silly money, now that everyone seems to be using them. But I want to just get the Tii done, so I can drive the bleedin thing.
The roof is for my car mate. Mine had a Webasto which I was going to keep and restore, but the surrounding metal was pretty rotten, so I will reskin the roof. Partly why I bought this shell, plus a few other odd bits and pieces. Sorry mate.
There is a good passenger side chassis rail, which I have removed complete, a spare wheel tub in pretty good condition, a good condition round light rear panel already removed and the early centre nostrils to adapt a later front panel, if needed. I have these advertised for sale. There are still two decent inner wings attached, one good strut tower and one in need of minor repair and a bit of odd floor in good condition.
To be honest mate, I was just going to scrap it. I would much prefer someone to make use of the metal that is left, if it is of use. I have cut it in half, so it would be pretty easy to take away with a pick up TBH !!!! I might advertise it as a freebie and see what happens. After I get your bit of course ;-)
Would save me having to cart it down to the scrappies for the sake of £20 !!!
I doubt you'd even get £20 for it these days. I weighed in 2.2 ton of heavy iron and got £55!
I appreciate that cut out from that she'll though. You tell me what you need for it and I'll transfer it to you.
I'll get this car up and running hopefully before Le Mans in June, then I'll contemplate an engine swap. S2000 sounds a great one. Proven too! For the time being, I'll go with twin 40's for a bit of noise!
Just wanted to say cheers in advance to B1N9S for the scrap piece he's sending me to repair this area. Top bloke.
If anyone else has any scrap 02 pieces they don't mind parting with, please let me know. I do need the same area for the other (drivers) side, amongst a few other pieces, so please let me know.
Looks a good tool Steve. In fact it looks too easy to be true. Is shrinking really as easy as heating and cooling it down? Surely these quarters are beyond that
in the right skilled hands it looks easy , i used to work with a guy that could have sorted it out , but theres not many highly skilled guys about anymore
Well I'm hoping the bloke up my yard can tackle the drivers side for me if I can't get a repair piece for it, or I don't have a decent enough skin on a door. I might grab one of them discs anyway, just so I can say I've got one!
