Can this flywheel be repaired?

I have drilled some flywheels for bolting vee pulleys to, swarf comes off in longer pieces than common cast iron. I would say the flywheel is not like engine block cast iron but is a good quality cast iron more like what piston rings etc are made of.

I would bin it!,, Cast flywheel yes they are ok on low RPM engines, ,If you did weld it up etc it would still need balancing,as it would be way off, My way of looking at it is the gearbox is by your legs or some times by your ball's"

Andy you must have bigger ball than me,, when it went bang & bits flew out I felt All my luck was used up, never used a cast flywheel in comp motor since.

Why, when going through the expense and the time to build an engine, would you bother to use something thats cracked, needs repair, might have more cracks you cannot see and isn't really made of the right material in the first place.

I've only built a few engines, but if there was a part i don't have complete faith in, like a conrod or something, it simply does not go into that engine.

Of course it's cast how could steel crack like that??! I've seen the aftermath of a docile old fergi 35 Perkins over revving , internet bull aside flywheels are serious,even us thick farmers know that

Yes steel can crack like that is the simple answer.

Unlikely they would use such a steel for a fly wheel though.

Don't know where I got land cruiser from, ignore that comment of mine.
Having now read the thread fully, I still maintain that I would have no hesitation running that flywheel after machining and balancing.
Whether or not that flywheel in cast iron is suitable for the build I have to defer to others.

Cast iron is not suitable for a supercharged lump with capability to rev to 9k and 580-600ft/lb torque, I want a fit and forget solution and this doesn't cut it.

i must admit if it was run of the mill engine i would mill the bad bit out and do likewise to balance it on the other side .but if i had a decent rebuilt motor putting out a lot of poke i would change to a steel one no point in doing half a job anything is only as strong as its weakest point

give it a tap and see if it rings!, there are lots of cast parts sold in kits I pick up a scat kit that had a crank that was cast

it's quite possible that the dowel is a correct fit and the dowel took the full whack of the sideways force(think giving a dowel a sideways swipe with an hammer, as it's cast it'll give what you got )if you decide to weld then I normally use dissimilar rods as I do on 6 inch vices e t c would advise re-balancing in any event

its cast iron not steel u can tell by looking at the grain in the metal

The indent in the rim at 2 o'clock also indicates a sand casting mark for cast iron . The colour of the machined surfaces is looking good for spheroidal cast iron as well .

What's that old maxim buy cheap buy twice. Been there and done it myself once or twice.

I'm very wary of buying off eBay anything that is over £20 if it is not brand new & in the unopened packing or not from a registered engineering or trading address .
I've been sent all manner of broken crap that has been shown as a stock picture from elsewhere that is totally different when it's arrived.
One thing I'll never ever do again is buy anything that is small & engine or electrically driven if it's secondhand , I've been swizzed once too often ...the final time with a Husky chain saw.

Glad you've got it sorted though, you'll sleep much happier for it.

Here's mine (well same as mine)









I gave them a 12 V Monza cast Iron Flywheel

A Lotus Carlton Crankshaft

A Monza GSE friction plate

An Audi S3 Pressure plate

And said I want the bolt spacing and fitment to fit The LC crank, The pressure plate to be Audi S3, the friction plate Monza, the ring gear to be same as Monza and the overall release bearing position to be same as a Monza

Oh and whilst I did get 3 made they cost us £275 each
