Can this flywheel be repaired?

I would say its definitely cast iron too, there is a grain to it, steel would not crack like that, as for repairs...would you feel comfortable knowing you had a engine that contained a suspect part?

I don't see the fracture carrying on in the side of the disc? thats unusual for a fracture so near the edge.

If you look radially out from the dowel there's a small crack widening toward the outer circumference.

i cant see a flywheel breaking up and getting through the bellhousing then through the cars steel tunnel and into your foot tbh...Iff were talking top fuel dragsters which let go of there massive T/C at insane rpm,s then yea.

centrifugal force is immense. I believe the fella said its an LS400 v8, no slouch in tuned form and could easily put a damaged flywheel thru a gearbox, firewall and foot

do a search for clutch explosions to see how much force can be released when it lets go

its cast iron not steel u can tell by looking at the grain in the metal

You've got a better screen than me. I used to have to use a microscope to view grain structure and assess the pearlite and cementite grains compared to the graphite areas.

that monaro driver still has his feet..lame
come on i wanna see toes hanging from lamp posts and drivers getting out and falling over because one leg is 6" shorter before i believe a normal flywheel can come into the cabin and perform one of Bupa,s private hospitals finest in a nano second

shoulda gone to specsavers u can tell by the finish after its been faced up on the lathe . the finish is grey and dull steel would be shiny and silver

I have seen one blow on a twin cam we built years ago pulled off the line it popped out of 1st with foot still on floor, one bit embedded in tarmac, second bigger bit embedded in tree 20 yards away after bouncing off tarmac, & biggest bit came through the magnesium bell housing, through the TX tunnel, then through the heater plenum chamber into engine compartment & left a tear in the bonnet.
The clutch cover was like torn cardboard & we never found the cover plate.
It was on the start line of a stage with numerous people around how no one was hit or killed is one of life's mysteries.
Throw it away it is not worth even thinking about repair,

More like 'the boy' didn't drill the hole big enough and just decided to use a bit more pressure on the press to slide the dowel in, then oops! I can't see that bursting from being dropped unless there's a casting flaw in it.

Draw it up in cad and have one machined if you send over dxf files it saves a small fortune.

I saw a flywheel burst on a tractor , it smashed the bellhousing to bits , becauce the cab was behind the flywheel the driver was not hurt but he got a hell of a suprise when his tractor broke in half . Do not try to repair yours , it is not worth the risk .
