Can this flywheel be repaired?

flywheel and repair! I know most would say not safe blah blah

But this arrived from the states today, someone has dropped it!

I waited 5 weeks for it! Wasn't too expensive to be honest.

Not sure if it's cast iron or steel.

But the dowels are not in the right place for the pressure plate I'll be using anyway. Also the bolt holes need redrilling to suit.



Any suggestions?

Or maybe just mill out a neat section there and 3 other equally spaced places to balance

Who knows what other stress cracks have been made that are not visible to the naked eye ???? I would complain to the company you bought it from and claim against the shipper. If and when that flywheel lets go, it will saw thru the metal like a knife thru butter.

looks like steel to me , shouldn't be a problem to remove dowel and get that welded , if it was the mating face i wouldn't consider a repair but there's no real stresses going through that section , i'd say the problem has not been one of dropping but someone has persuaded a slightly large dowel into a slightly smaller hole !

I never gave that much though as to how hard it would have been dropped. And your right in what you are saying.

I am in discussion currently with supplier.

At least I can still use it for mocking up if I get to keep it. Well it's worthless now anyhow

It does seem odd, as if it were dropped in the dowel surely it would have totally fractures it off, it's
Like it's been struck from inside the flywheel, or like you say possibly not drilled to correct diameter. I really hope this is not the case as I wouldn't really trust another one being sent if that's their quality of workmanship

More like 'the boy' didn't drill the hole big enough and just decided to use a bit more pressure on the press to slide the dowel in, then oops! I can't see that bursting from being dropped unless there's a casting flaw in it.

It's not an American engine, I could have it made here for triple the price even with the shipping cost. If I could've I would've.

theres a very minor 3rd crack heading from the dowel at 90' which made me think "interference fit "

Basically a Lexus ls400 v8.

Into ab Opel manta A series.
Tremec tko600 gearbox (no manual version of the Lexus or direct fitment)

I would of said it's more to do with the dowel installed incorrectly. .it would need to be dropped from a tidy height to do that damage. ..

Cast iron isn't the best material for flywheel in tuned engines. I know this through the old bikes, the norton commando if revved above a certain point, is liable to explode like a hand grenade, the cast iron flywheel simply can't handle the centrifugal forces on it. If you make a new one out of something like en16 or 24, it will be bulletproof.
As someone else said , why take a chance ? if it does crack up it will destroy the rest of the engine/box.

I don't see the fracture carrying on in the side of the disc? thats unusual for a fracture so near the edge.
