Aye, not sure what the scam is, folk with dozens of cars for sale at bargain prices, I always check what else folk have for sale now when I look at adverts.

I think Facebook work on the principle of caveat emptor, I chased up some cheap containers advertised on there and they seemed very keen to take a deposit and deliver them, went very quiet when I said I would pay cash on collection,yeah right

I gather it's all about getting a deposit off the buyer.
I've reported dozens, I presume they're hacked accounts. The sellers disappear but the cars/JCB's/garden furniture/shipping containers/caravans/ Stihl chainsaws/etc, just come back under other accounts.
Reading the other day that 75% of all scams involving cars are listings on Meta/FB owned media.
Let the buyer beware indeed.

Definitely hacked. There’s more hacked accounts selling cars than legit ones at the moment.

There was a documentary on radio 4 about the vehicle sale scams. They copy the business model of some legit companies that actually sell cars without the customer seeing them in the flesh!
I mean who would spend tens of thousands on a car without seeing it in front their own eyes!
The scammers get the person to transfer the money. Its a very elaborate con that people fall for.

I’m waiting to see what the new digital platforms bill will bring. According to the new law it is the responsibility of the platform provider to ensure people don’t get scammed.

A friend put a motor cycle on Ebay but made the mistake of not hiding the reg no. in the photo .It hasn't sold so far. Yesterday he received a letter from DVLA to say that as he was the "previous owner" he was due a refund of the Road tax. He now has to prove that he still has the bike and he is legit and has been told that it could take up to 10 weeks to sort it out and in the meantime he cannot sell it or use it . I realise that most folk will be careful not to divulge the reg no. on the net but it seems all too simple to change ownership without any checks.

Same as the fat man from Plus-net, had 3 letters saying we are sorry you are leaving us, it would appear they just take a request at face value and start the transfer, no check to see if legitimate.

Can give a stolen vehicle an identity, once you have a V5 they can sell it. Will be found out, but the buyer will lose their money, and rightful owner will have to jump through fire hoops to prove it is theirs.

Yes.

As a new owner you can apply for a V5 in your name without the old V5. DVLA are understaffed and their local offices were closed decades ago so there is very little chance that anyone will come out to inspect the bike you bought (in good faith, advertised by the seller as "I had the logbook but can't find it - new owner will have to apply for a replacement).

As a safeguard, DVLA are supposed to send out a letter to the actual registered keeper as a warning : "Somebody has applied for a logbook for your bike - if you recently sold the bike ignore this letter, if you have not sold the bike contact us ASAP as somebody might be planning something dodgy."

Local CID contacted me about 1 bike I'd rebuild after I sold it and the new owner tried to tax it. I had applied for and got a V5 so I was happy they had checked everything and it was legit. I MOT'd it and sold it, we then found out DVLA only check it it's been reported stolen when somebody tries to tax it.
CID told me the previous owner had declered it stolen and claimed on the insurance, he then weighed it in at a local scrapyard with the numberplates still attached I bought it *legally* from the scrapyard ...

I bought a car with V5 and sent the V5 off to register it in my name. GPO lost it (not DVLA honest guv ), DVLA asked me to send the "new keeper" section in as proof - I did and that also got lost. I then had to apply for a logbook in my name without being able to supply the old (lost by DVLA/GPO) V5.

They now have a "valid" c5 which they can use to sell a stolen bike or transfer to a write off and then sell on. The C5 is worth more than the bikes .
