Can the Vulcan fly at night?

I only ask as tonight at just after 8.00 I heard what I thought (can you mistake it) was a Vulcan flying low over Goole towards Doncaster.

I didn't think they could fly at night.

It flew in the other direction last week sometime

I thought XH558 was undergoing major winter maintenance. If so, it won't be in the air. Especially after dark.

Don't think it was the Vulcan.

Whatever it was flew over my house too.. Confused as to what it was though. XH558 is undergoing major service for 2015...

As said, XH558 is having some work done (wing modification I think) so it won't be flying, could it have been an Eurofighter?

there are quite a few military multi engined jets...possibly yank fighter / tornado / typhoon on reheat?

Funny you should mention afterburners something flew over last week with a constant glow in the night, made a rite din

Not sure if you caught the radio program the other week (R4) was in the shed at the time listening. It was about the Vulcans being got ready and flying out to the Falklands to bomb the runway. Not a plane nut myself but late dad had a soft spot for the Vulcans having worked at RR. It was intresting to hear the scrabbling around that had to be done to get them ready (bearly!) to fly out. Almost an add for duct tape!

The refuelling task to get the Vulcans on target was mind boggling, the book 'Vulcan 607' is a good read and there's a couple of documentaries about it too.

i watched the documentary on it and it was a pure miracle that they got down there and back in one piece .they said they bombed the runway and it had little effect on the surface but psycologicaly was a success as they could bomb the mainland if wanted

Read it, good book, but a ridiculous amount of fuel used just to drop a few bombs, another fantastic read is "Sea Harrier Over The Falklands" by Sharkey Ward, he's rather critical about the Vulcan missions and the RAF in general but the stories of him and his crew flying the Harrier are brilliant. I especially liked the bit about how they managed to land the Harrier back on the carrier in thick fog. I won't say any more, don't want to spoil it for you...

I was given a tape, yes an audio tape, of the cockpit conversations on the Falklands mission.

I have yet to listen to it though. Quite a number of books on the aircraft too, its fantastic!

My uncle was a navigator on one of the refuelling aircraft. Normally he did search and rescue in Nimrods from Kinloss. Retired now obviously.

It was at broughton airbus factory families day a few years ago and we watched it from the mountain at the back of our house.

Even my wife, who is totally uninterested in stuff like this normally, thought it was hugely impressive!
