imo once your doing stuff thicker than 3mm if you can it's time to be running 1mm wire if you can. 5-6 mm is defantly time for 1mm wire and spray it in there if weld strength is needed.
i used to think i managed to get good results from a 180A sealy with 0.8 wire on 6mm. in reality they were managable for what it had to do then i started working with bigger kit and the results were night and day apart, sometimes now i get all ambitous with the littel mig and try do somethign thats really to much for it and end up getting the stick set out. i feel that i get much less distortion with more powerfull welder as whilst theres much more power in the arc and the weld is hotter your moveing faster so everything around it dosent get as hot its a damb sight neater and faster to.
when you see the bits after a weld has failed it becomes clear just how much diffrence it makes with the bigger machene the weld itself is often intact and there has been a trench riped out the other plate where the weld and a load of the base metal has come with it. with the small machene there is no trench just bits of weld on both bits
