Can I weld legs for an alternator?

Hi
I want to install a vehicle alternator on a steel plate - not in the vehicle. what I would like to ask if its safe to arc weld four tiny points to fix the legs that I've attached to the alternator to the base plate on which I'm constructing it. the alternator isn't connected to anything but I want to make sure that it want cause any damage to the diodes and/or the regulator.

Can't see why not, but I would rather make up a bracket to fix it using the original mounts.

I'd go with brackets too, if they're done right it would give adjustment to tension the drive belt and easier to change if there's a problem.

What kind of alternator are you using, every one I've seen has been cast ally..?!

This simplifies his question.
He already has four points (metal brackets, I presume) attached to the alternator which he wants to weld to a base plate. I say yes, its ok to weld but attach the earth/return to the base plate

Thanks for your comments. perhaps I didn't mentioned it but the legs (and the alternator) will be fixed to a plate with slots that will enable slide it in order to tension the belt, so it's a sort of a bracket, as have been suggested. but the legs must be welded to the plate. sorry that I was not clear enough. the alternator is a Valeo. its model#-
I cant find it anywhere.
