Hello, may I ask a question as already stated, I am new to the forum and site. How would it be possible to touch the rod when Mig welding, is that not a wire system.
i use the 7018 rod they are fairly bulky, because i am usually welding things like car frames, and I beams, and I have heard that this rod is a pretty good all purpose rod, aslo my welder is a 295 amp silvertone welder, is it a decent welder?, any one know, i know that you can weld some heavy duty stuff with 295 amps, I have never come close to needing all of the amps.
i find when i mig weld i touch the piece of work with my last 3 fingers , and i may be able to get more control, but am unsure if i can touch the rod as i am welding.
If I recall, Snowcat managed to put cold mig wire through his finger recently?
Whats a lollipop?

i meant touch the rod while arc welding. i was told by one of my dads friends who was a welder for years to use a 7018 rod, because it is "hard" to use and you must be good to get a really nice bead, so he said it is a good rod to practice with because if you can make a nice bead with it then you can bead nicely with pretty much any rod.
7018's work well but they must be kept dry. I picked up a rod oven cheap off fleabay. I have some 7014's that are just as nice to use but do not need to be kept bone dry.
Don't know about that. The Lincoln 6013's I have do a nice bead, but are dull looking. The 7018's seem to do a glossier bead (they seem more sensitive to technique.) I do believe 6013's are much easier on positional work.A 6013 in the right hands will always leave a neater looking bead, and should create nice long pealing slag once you get it right... but avoid cheep white boxes, Some are fine but as a beginner you wont know if they are or not.
