Can I run a reversing switch....

now then all, looking st getting a dewhurst switch for the Kerry lathe but as I'm not massively great on electrics, can this motor be reversed?

Could you please stop mentioning Kerry lathes, my mate has one and I hesitate to go into his shed as it brings on intense envy and I'm sure it gives my Atlas overwhelming feelings of inadequacy :-/

Has he got the r8 collet chuck and drawbar? I'd be wanting to have a look if he does

Take the lid off the electric box instead.

Will do tomoro, I only nipped out quickly to see what the motor actually is in the hope some Google fu might provide the answer. Sadly not

I'd be very surprised if it can't be reversed very easily - the Clarke motors are pretty generic and just sold as 'motor' rather than 'motor for xx'.

There should be a diagram inside the box to show what to swap to change direction, then it's just a case of a changeover switch.

I've been fried enough times now to have a healthy fear of leccy, so if I don't post after tomoro, I've poked something I shouldn't have and I'm dead.:

Excellent, I just got a box of collets with mine but no chuck or drawbar there's a ropey looking machine on eBay that I've been watching that has a few bits but it's just started being bid up beyond economical use now

buy a modern reversing switch. Most of the Dewurst switches that seem to be for sale are ancient and require plenty of work to get them operational. Modern ones will also be smaller and cheaper to buy.

I bought a similar motor to replace the original on my ML7 & easily wired it through the existing Myford reversing switch.

Have a look under the junction box on the motor there will be a diagram

I believe that there will be 2 or 4 wires (in the box) that go to the motor windings.

2 wires = non reversible

Just ask your better half to stand ready with a wooden brush handle to knock you off the live electrics if you do get a shock, I'm sure she'll be more than happy to hit you.

I used to work with a guy that had a burn scar on his lower arm from reaching under a floorboard and getting a belt from a junction box that had been left with the cover missing, we used to wind him up saying the reason the burn was so bad was his missus first stood there reading his life insurance policy before deciding whether or not to help him.

Almost certainly reversible. The capacitor suggests a second winding for phase-shift to bias starting direction.

Righto, el cheapo switch has arrived and is making my brain itch already.

looking from the front of the switch the terminals are numbered from the top as follows

2 1
4 3
blank blank
6 5
blank blank

as you can see in the pictures, on the right side, no3 and the blank terminal under it are linked, as is 5 and the terminal underneath it.

on the left, no4 and the very bottom terminal are linked, as are the 1st blank terminal and no6

so chaps, where do i go from here
