Can I put swa on telephone poles ?

Hi

Am I allowed to fasten my own armoured cable to the 2 telephone poles on my land between my house & garage or would BT not be happy ?

I was thinking of fastening my cable about a foot lower than the telephone cable.

I could bury the cable but I don't really fancy digging a 60 meter trench

i would think you would need permission from bt legally and i doubt they would give it from a health and safety point of view because of their linesmen

Bug**r, but to be honest it's kinda what I expected.

I don't suppose it makes any difference but the only telephone cable on there is the one to my house.

I'm sure I've seen power cables & phone lines sharing poles....

As a BT apprentice I used to install poles with both single drop wires like yours and big multicore cables with built in catenary wires. We did sometimes put drop wires on power poles but it never happened the other way round and you had to liaise with the electicity board as usually it was a few thousand volts on the pole.

Poles for distributing service to a single house will be lightweight and bend a bit to say the least if you put heavy cables and associated tension without stay wires. Even if you don;t see it immediately the bend will be apparent very soon aftewards

And yes, BT would get the hump

just get digging think about it both cables on same poles .wires get damaged and theres 240volt down the telephone system

As all ready said no bt will take the hump. Also you would need to put up a steel wire to fasten the swa to as the support distances would be to far and stretch the cable

yes you can! but you have to negotiate a lease and pay rent. They call it occupation. A chap I know is a wayleave officer with a power company and he spends all day sorting out problems with land owners and occupiers. The only reason you don't see it too often is that the occupier is unwilling to pay rent. Telephone companies are reluctant to pay even when it's cheaper that erecting their own poles. There is no problem in practice, it's just about money.

There may be a way in terms of process but if the poles in question are designed and installed to take a couple of drop wires for a house then they will need to be swapped out for bigger poles and straining wires added to counter the tension in the overhead cable and its catenary wire. That's why you sometimes see BT wires on power poles (big mothers!) but never the other way round.

I used to take aerial cables off between poles on old telegraph routes which used to be very big poles, taking off the tension was always scary as the pole can whip and snap at the bottom, and your leaning back on a belt at the top - gulp!
