can I buy oxy

Hi all yes I'm a newbie, what a great site you have here, I have a question not sure which section to put it in, so sorry if it's the wrong one, I have bin told I need to be a registered co, before I can buy oxy-acet is this right?

unsure about the acetylene as i've never tried to buy it but the likes of hobbyweld cater for the DIY'er with rent free Oxygen bottles (deposit reqd on bottle though).

Also, do you need Acetylene? If gas welding then yes but if your only heating / cutting etc then propane will do the job and Propane is cheaper and readily available.

Oh, and welcome to the forum, im sure some of the guy's on here will have a better and more definative answer than myself.

I have certainly had accounts with gas suppliers before I was a 'business', so no problem I think.

Now I'm self employed and have oxy propane, no one asked to see any info, plus being self employed isn't really the same as a ltd co anyway, you don't have any extra 'status' over a private individual.

Get oxy propane.

No, you can't 'buy' the bottles, just the gas. But what you've been told is cobblers, You can rent from BOC or AP or a deposit agreeement with adams gas or the like.

I got an account with AP just by phoning rep and showing a utility bill at depo. Can now rent what ever I like (I can also get a few special gases but I do hold EU licences for those!)

thanks chaps knew you would have th answer, yes I will be using propane as mainly for heating metal and maybe a bit of cutting, days of gas welding over so no need of acet, again thanks for your help, now for more reading of this excelent forum

Any idea how much boc screw you for , for say the half size oxy/ace bottles ? They rub it in a bit for a full size bottle, charge me €140 a year rental for argon full size.

I wasn't aware Hobbyweld done Acetylene, just checked their website and there is no mention of it!

Do you have to see certain Hobbyweld stockist to get it?

There isn't any point in hiring an Acetylene if you're not going to be welding, You can put a deposit and buy a refill for less than £40 on a 19KG propane

In response to the OP's question, I believe certain states or cities in the USA (New York I believe) require certain registrations before obtaining acetylene - mainly so they can check safe storage for fire regulations.
I hang around on a couple of merkin welding/hobby sites, and I've seen it mentioned.

Not required in UK, although you may have restrictions on keeping them at home, depending upon your local authority/landlord
