Can anyone suggest a good blowlamp?

Apart from running hotter my old Taymar worked in all directions.
Also the mapp gas is almost 3x the price.
Will it use 3x less gas?

No i dont think they do. Im alway amazed how long a bottle lasts. Far longer than the old red propane torches

If your really worried about how much gas your using (or you need to use it often) then you need to think bigger and go for a full on Sievert or Bullfinch on a big propane cylinder

For odd jobs here and there then go for MAPP gas with a Rothenberger Torch. Expensive but you wont regret it

@fizzy. Ask someone who goes to Rufforth. There’s a stall inside the shed next to the cafe that sells Rothenberger torch heads, cheap enough.

I already have a big torch to connect to a propane cylinder but hand held so much more useful.
I just don't see the attraction in paying 3x the price for the smaller mapp over the aerosol type.
Having said that just found an adaptor to convert mapp torches to cheaper aerosol types. And I have 5 of those full.

Butane/propane mix a fiver. Why pay £4 more? Basically the cost difference is the other cylinders are much heavier duty. Seems a waste to throw them away.

My trusty old gas blowlamp has a stripped thread in the brass. Can't screw on a new cartridge - either that or they have changed the thread?
I started looking for a new one to purchase, Since when did they start calling them blow torches? I have always called them a blow lamp. Or does that only apply to the old paraffin ones?

Anyway loads and loads out there but can't find the sort I want. I do NOT need a MAPP one.
I just want to use the propane/butane mix screw on aerosol type.

Remember the old Taymar range? Nobody seems to sell a blow lamp these days with such a wide range of attachments.

I am looking for something like this. Or similar. I could only find this one after ages of searching.

Yes the Tamar gas cans are still available in lots of DIY type outlets , did you check it is not the rubber seal on the piercing thread that's your problem ? Suggest you measure the thread with a cheap digital F type caliper and check diameter the thread on the cans before you pay for them

Usually it mentions it fits Tamar on the side of the Tamar compatable can .

I wish everyone would stop calling them Mapp torches. They can use Propane as well. I don’t get on with Mapp unless soldering pipe fittings over 28mm. I had a super fire 2 for 20 years. It was a prize for being plumbing apprentice of the year in the 90s. When I lost/lent it to someone I gave up on getting it back and got another. More convenient than the old style torches, last well, spares and accessories are available including adaptors to hose connection.

I've got a Rothenburger.

They're silly money, but mine broke after years of use. I called Rothenburger seeing if I could buy spares...

...they sent me a service kit free of charge. I don't think I even had to pay postage or anything.

This was probably a decade after purchase.

Mapp is cheap enough from Toolstation. Used to be £11.50 with free delivery before covid. They've messed with the delivery now but it's still not too shocking if you buy in store.

Map gas and a good torch, the extra heat from the map I wouldn't want to be without especially soldering outside in the winter and when it comes to removing stubborn things its surprising what you can get moving with 2 of them on the job.

Same here, a local tool stockist had the Rottenbugger torches on special offer @ £25 a piece so I grabbed two, I keep one in the workshop and the other in the truck, it does everything a small torch needs to do

I have a couple of rothenburger torches they're invaluable. If you're using them for heating rusty fixings i found welding a short piece of pipe to a bar for a handle holding the pipe over the bolt then blasting the torch into the pipe seems to contain the heat and also stops surrounding things catching fire. I have a few of different sizes i wack a lump of hazelwood off the tree in the garden for an insulated handle..........Works a treat

i own 5 of them 2 are normal old style blow lamps used on plumbing

this one i can braze with it



this one is the superfire model looking down into it and yes a loverly blob of solder in it this is how the vortex is created on them



my other is also a mapp gas blow torch without the vortex on it and a different flame on it

between them i have my favourate blowlamp the top picture its had tyears of service with it and i look after it

the mapp gas im not a lover off due to peierser in them prefer to light from the end than pay for a gimmick with mapp blow lamps

i even take the mickey out of the garage owners using a plumbers blowlamp than there own accetterlyne and ive rubbed it in and right

mapp gas i use for bad bolts and will admit it however the upside blowlamp is also my goto blowlamp for this takes a bit longer but will get to cherry red

i find mapp gas for piping is a little hot for plumbing fittings im aware of this so dont over heat the pipes or fittings

oh and my blowlamp is old 30 years + for it and still works to the day i bought it

my blowlamp has done leading and car leading lead to copper, copper to copper brazing and much more uses ive done with it mapp gas is and can be way too hot for many applications

plumber by trade @Kayos hes in same trade so will have his own comments and input on them

i also had an argument with my brother as i said the Rottenbugger flares when upside down and i proved it that it does flare on a higher flame when in use mine does not i also dont need to adjust it like the Rottenbugger torches on there sides or upside down

try it straight after first lighting them you will find they will flare but will settle down or you adjust them before going upside down
